New Forum Gategory
Who among you is up to starting a new forum dedicated solely to illiterate and quasi-illiterate members?
Maybe I'm nitpicking here, but I have been a member of and president of a number of car clubs in my forty-four years of life on this planet, and I have never been witness to such a mass bastardization of the english language as I have seen on these boards.
Spelling, syntax errors and speed typing faux pas aside, you guys are genius at what we are all interested in, the third generation f-body.
If you want or expect others in the automotive enthusiast crowd to take you/us/our cars seriously, for ***'s sake, develop your typing, spelling and grammar beyond that of a grade six special education student.
Jesus ...I really am getting old...I'm ranting on the internet.
Ok, I'll shut up now and wait for the hate-mayl to start rolling in.

Your right but you also need to realize what type of people own 3rd gens. Some of them ARE just kids that type ebonics or something like that judging by some of the posts here. You also need to realize that being an internet board, it is mostly kids or young adults that are the active one's on boards like this.
I'm just saying to cut people some slack.
With that said I know this is going to be deleted but I just wanted to ask you to be a little more tolerent
BTW, why did you choose this forum to post this in?

This won't be deleted, its something that needs to be addressed, although this may not be the correct board.
I fully appreciate the involvement of younger members, please realize I'm not passing judgement on anybody's thoughts, or intentions involving their cars, merely the way in which we all communicate.
We are after all, on the same team.
Lets face it; the Camaro/Firebird vehicles do have a stigma attached to them; of low-life under educated inbred idiots, trying to save up enough cash for a little bit more Bondo, and some booth time at Maaco.
The third gen deserves a hell of a lot more respect than it gets, and we will never get it as long as we accept that these cars are anything less than American classics worthy of respect among our automotive brethern.
And we certainly are not going to gain that respect solely by quarter-mile times.
American muscle should not mean that the driver is dead from the neck up, there is no excuse for poor diction, grammar and spelling, all this does is to perpetuate our image of wearing hockey helmets on the school bus, we are all better than that.
Blah Blah Blah...Yada Yada yada.

Just give it another 15, 20, or 25 years and 3rdgen's will have more respect. Simply changing how we communicate on a message board isn't going to have an impact on that, nothing will except the passage of time. I agree with your intentions and feelings toward our cars but just give it time

Who cares how people type, (as long as its readable) I barely see any of what you're talking about anyway. Stereotypes are just that, and in most cases BS. I don't happen to know of any people that you described in your post with F-Bodies where I am or that I've known. People love them and they are looked at as something cool/special which is what they are. I wouldn't complain about spelling with a topic titled "New Forum Gategory" LOL!!
BTW, this should be on the Suggestions and Comments board.

Stargategfx is correct. The "English" I've seen used on these boards has me disturbed. Can it be that so many teenagers & 20 year olds cannot read/write beyond the sixth grade level? My third grade daughter (eight years old) can do a better job than most I've seen here. It makes me wonder about the quality of education today. It really shows in the English.
That being said, I really should move this thread to the correct board.

I think he put "Gategory" and "hate-mayl" on purpose.
I agree with him to some extent though. I see people who don't know the difference between "their", "there", and "they're" all the time. But I just don't post about it cause it doesn't really bother me, its just kinda sad to see people don't know basic spelling. Sure, not everyone is a genius, but it doesn't take a genius to understand correct grammar at a sixth grade level.
Oh well, what can ya do though?

the grammar bugs me too. the spelling...not so much, but the sentence structure is ridiculous.
I would trade it all in a heartbeat for some honest maturity, and good taste. But that's kids for ya.
I would trade it all in a heartbeat for some honest maturity, and good taste. But that's kids for ya.
It bugs me, too. Even the little-bitty things like Bort's capitalization of random words
or the kids' writing the word "like" just like they speak it. "okay so like I was doing such-n-such". Then there's the always infamous run-on sentence from hell where every trace of punctuation is nonexistant almost as if those keys have disappeared of the keyboard it takes you several minutes to decipher the post then you forget all about what their question is and you type out a sarcastic reply about using some punctuation next time instead.
But like MetalliCamaroRS said: "What can you do about it?"
The rest of the time you just have to accept that this is how these people are and that they're still trying to get an idea across. They are either oblivious of what it makes them look like, or don't care.
And the reason that it was mentioned this thread might or might not be allowed to live long is that this forum is really for collecting comments pertaining to the board itself, not the users. There's really nothing the moderators or administrators can do about mass illiteracy.

Double check your work!
Most of us would be surprised at the number of people that can't read and write, yet have high school diplomas and college degrees. Go to any college and you will see how many people struggle with the basic math and English skills test that is needed to graduate.
I do believe that there are many people on this and all boards that write and post instead of writing then editing. That little "edit" button can make a world of difference. Then again these are the same people that in class would finish the test early, run up to the teacher with their paper and turn it in instead of proof reading it. Then when they get a D or C wonder why, when all they needed was another five minutes of checking their work.
Oh well, what can you do. To paraphrase Crazy Hawaiian, "Saving the world, one post(drift) at a time.

Why even edit? Maybe no one has noticed the little button right next to the SUBMIT REPLY that says PREVIEW REPLY. It allows a person to (yes, that's right!) see what their post will look like before it's posted. It's especially helpful when you're trying to hyperlink an image and you want to see if you got it right.
That comes across harsh.. just know that I wasn't trying to be.

One should consider that not everyone is from US and not everyones primary language is ENGLISH.And i'm one of them. This board is for sharing information on F-Bodies not information on English.I found stargategfx's comments useless.

That's what spell check is for. The English language is a joke when it comes to spelling and I hate having to remember the spelling of every word. You can't refer to any set rules since there are none. If I type 4 in everyone knows I mean the number 4 but if I have to spell it, it could come out for, fore or four. Proof reading is like using a carb, there are better and more efficient ways to get fuel to the engine. If I have to use a carb, I may not have the time or inclination to tune it 100%, but for the most it gets the job done. Granted this doesn't cover every point you bring up but I think you see my point.

-"English" in "English language" should be capitalized.
-There should be a comma in between "syntax errors," and "and" in the second paragraph.
-"Faux pas" is French, and directly translates to "improper step." Indirectly, it inferrs that some social blunder has been made. None of your examples represent a social blunder.
-Also, in the second paragraph, you say; "you guys are genius." People cannot be genius. They can be geniuses, or exhibit traits of genius.
-Another comma has been omitted in the third paragraph.
-Your final paragraph shows 2 incorrect uses of a punctuation pause.
-Your final sentence should have 2 commas. "Mail" is spelled with an "i." "Hate mail" should not be hyphenated.
You can do better than this. See me after class.

I don't think its a good idea. First of all, its kind of like segregation. It would divide members into 2 groups, which would inevitably have problems with each other. Also, I think that it would eventually get overrun with useless posts, and flame posts.

OK, this is getting to that point...as do most posts nowadays.
First of all, I don't think he actually wanted to segregate the site
it's called sarcasm.
As for people from other countries.....relax....no one was refering to you guys.
And to everyone else who wants to flame this guy.....read between the proverbial lines. The internet hides a lot of flaws in people. Just look at how much crap is on this website on a daily basis. Look at all the flaming.....all the namecalling. Sure, the grammer "ain't" great, but that's just what's on the surface. The people who can't put together coherent thoughts are the same ones who flame everything they don't like. It's ignorance. The grammar just happens to be a side effect of being a moron. So many people say things to people here that they would never say to people face to face. It's a complete lack of respect for one another, and it's sad that we all share such common interests, yet can't get along.

stargategfx: Lighten up. People can type however they want. We are all here to help each other, not to complain about spelling errors. I'm sorry we're not part of the elite "automotive enthusiast crowd" who grammer check their replies before posting. Get off your high horse you ****ing snob.

People do not seem to realize that the only thing people have to judge the intelligence of the poster. Now ask yourself, would you trust someones recommendation on injector or carb selection if they typed it "LOL UR CAR HAZ 2 B HAVING 24LB/HR INEJCTERS CUZ IT HAZ A MINAMAL AMOWNT OF MODZZZ OK??? LOL!" Does that sound like that person knows what they are talking about? How about the inability to type out the entire word "you" which for some reason is contracted to "u?"
It might seem like intellectual snobbery but seriously what more does one have to go on except the words on the page? It really doesn't take THAT long to check over what you typed so you don't sound like a complete moron, regardless of your actual intelligence.

The school system is really bad in my area. The half that could barely read and write were in special ed but they are completly normal people who just didnt care about thier education or future for a matter of fact. What makes me so mad is the education they recieved. Every and I mean every day the teacher would come in sit in her chair and tell the whole class to get on the computer and play games or surf the internet
How in the heck are they gonna learn how to read and write playing games all day in school? Well I done ranting on that subject now. Spell check, thats what the boards need. Have it right next to the Submit Reply button or somewhere close to it. Senior Member

I've always been amused by typos, flat-out misspellings, grammar goofups, etc. We all make them once in a while, but I think some of them are out of control and have become urban legends! "Definately" "Sacrafice" "origional", the "its / it's" difference just to name a few. There's a mechanic nearby here with a sign that says "WE DO MUFFLERS AND BREAKS". I mean come on! If I need my car broken, I can do it myself! Like I said, we all do it, but for those few people who do it constantly and repeatedly over and over, I think it's kind of hard to take that person seriously..
Like no matter what they say, it's always marred by the errors. You know it's not intentional, but it still leaves a bad impression. I have to look at the keyboard when I type so I make TONS of errors, and then I go back and edit my posts which is why there's always that "last edited at blabla" at the bottom of all my posts.
Chuck Woolery was talking about when they first gave him the idea for an American version of the game show "Lingo" which came here from the UK I think, and when he got the proposal to bring it here he was like "no way! that show won't work in the U.S.! They can't spell here!" That's just an example of how bad it is.
As far as a new forum, I'd say there's really no need for it.. Americans have historically been great speakers, but bad spellers and bad writers, and it's a fact of life. Not a good thing, not a bad thing; but a true thing (and a funny thing, IMHO). I don't think there's enough brain stimulation going on in today's schools. Look at Beaver Clever .. do you know any child today who is that bright, that perceptive, that educated, that eager? I don't. Maybe it all has to do with Attention Deficit and stuff like that.. disorders caused by our warped society in the last 20 years or so.

I use to be AD and really hyperactive, I had to take freakin Rittilen (I cant remember how its spelled) 3 times a day and see a stupid doctor that kept upping my doseage every 6 months. Lucky I got over it with the help of many depressing series of events in my life and the fact that I found an interisting and exciting hobby
fixing and restoring 3rd gen Camaros. I've been rittilen free for 4 years
and hope to keep it that way.

Tongi....I'm glad you used the word "your" society. It is "ours", and in "our" society, we use ADD as an excuse for everything....and we hand out drugs and ignore the real problem. THAT my friend...is warped.
As for you and others who actually have ADD, that's not what was being refered to.
I'm just gonna sit here and interperet for everyone so you don't all kill each other.

Always squriming around and having to do something or I would become a real nusance in class. After 6 greuling years of the "control drugs" and horrid depression I was taken off of them. Thank G0D I move to Arkansas, and was able to get on track with my life. I know when I will have a child they will have ADD. Every generation of my males in my family have had ADD. I will never put my child on those damn drugs after what I went through. Society as a whole will need to learn to properly deal with this awful diease to fix the lives it ruins.

btw, speaking of education.... i graduated from high school in 2001. some people that i went to high school with cannot read a regular clock with hands, or a watch with hands. they were so used to everything being digital.... they were fun to try and give military time to.
one thing i do notice of course, is my typing, because i've slacked off since high school on my typing. that's why you mainly see me rarely using capital letters.

It's all cause & effect. It's ALL cause and effect. I have nothing against people with ADD or lack of attention spans, lack of wanting to be part of a larger cause, etc. I have something very much against the society that causes those conditions to exist. Today society is all about how you can impress others. It's all about how you can out-do the next guy. Not about how you can CONTRIBUTE to the well-being of others, like it used to be. Every person living in a big city is subconsciously CYNICAL whether they admit it or not. Things are very different than they used to be, and designer-diseases like ADD go along with that as a direct result. They didn't exist 100 years ago and I don't see any books that named it as an identifiable problem. "Timeline 1903: We have explosion of A.D.D. in all our kids and we have no drugs to cope with it." You'll never see anything implying that in any book from back then. 50 years ago everyone could spell and write, even little pre-school kids. I'm not trying to brag but I could read anything in a newspaper at age 3 and this was not unusual, it was common for any kid where I grew up. And it was a Greek newspaper; Greek being the 3rd most difficult language to learn, behing Japanese and Chinese. This was about 1978. Today's society is all about IMAGE and INTIMIDATION, and no CONTENT behind that image and intimidation. A.D.D. and illiteracy are a direct result of it. For example, people making sure their kids look all popular and acceptable with the right fashionable clothes when they go to school, then not bothering to verify if their kid actually took any valuable knowledge from the classroom. D'oh. Whatever happened to putting together Legos, assembling robot erector kits, or board games like Trivial Pursuit? All you have today is Pokemon and Barney being stupidcute on TV. It's ALL inter-related. Today's society is flawed. Who's got the tallest SUV? Who has the designer clothes? Which white trash has the trendiest 89-cent Calvin Klein glasses? (oops.) And I say that as a white guy, heh. Don't kill the messenger..

Back to the orignal poster of this thread...
I agree that people need to learn how to use proper sentence structure, etc. especially on a message board. How do you expect to help someone over the internet if they can't properly convey their problems, feelings, etc? If I bought a part for my car and the instructions that came with it were crap, then it doesn't do me any good.

Re: What's a "Gategory"?
I think most of the guys here can relay thier thoughts in a intelligible manner. There are, however, a few who should not be allowed to play with a computer unless supervised by an adult.
That's impressive NTChrist. Are these your grammatical skills, or your computer's grammar check program?:hail:

See me after class.

where's the post starter? we are here to help and correct anyway we can, right? therefore, being as it may, this is not a school. yeah, it bugs me to when talking to people or reading things misspelled, but its not up to me to tell them they are below normal educationally. that is not my place in life. i say let it go and get on with it. if you can't read it because its misspelled then dont read it. its as simple as that.

Nah, no grammar check here. They're a little unrealiable, and often misread things. I'm basically going off of what I learned/am learning in school.
I hope everybody got that that was sarcasm, and that I was showing the original poster (wherever he went) that nobody's perfect.

I'll chime in, LOL. when you got 15,000 posts, sometimes you don't have time to edit, or take your time,
But, I try my best to make what I type readable and understandable to people. Certain things, like sentence structure and punctuation can make something you're trying to make helpful just a little more clear for people to understand.
But, I think there is a point to being nit picky, like NTchrist wrote in one reply where he was being sarcastic.
I think people should try a little harder sometimes, but then again, there aren't many on here that post stuff that I can't understand.
In the end, sure I may be annoyed, but if I am, I'll usually say something in their post for them to make they're typing a little more clear for others to understand.
I mean I've read some posts with NO punctuation, I feel like I have to decode the darn thing.
