Dont know where to post it, but anyone else find "Search" annoying?

Ok, I was just wonderin if anyone else finds the "search" feature annoying? I am trying to look up "T-5 Horsepower limits" or something similar, but T-5 will not let me search, because its less than 3 letters. How else do i do it? I cannot type in 5 speed, because "5" is less than 3 letters. There were other things ive searched for before, and i couldnt do it because of this limit.

So, does anyone else feel my pain, or am i just the crybaby of the day. Also, Why is it like this? Thanks in advance, Also you guys should have a "Website suggestions/problems" forum, or if you do, point me to it, because i do not see it.

Thanks.

Your topic of desire is covered all the time. There are threads going on right now in the drivetrain board on the first page. Try a search with a whole sentence like "how much power can the T5 take" etc.

I just did exactly that, and this is what i got:
"The search term you specified (t5) is under the minimum word length (3) and therefore will not be found. Please make this term longer"

U should try it. I think typing in wheel sizes does it too.
like type in "17" wheel backspacing"

I understand that the topic is going on in drivetrain, ive been readin up, but i wanted to ween out all the non t-5 topics by searching.

This should help a bit and maybe give you some more clues.

We cannot do anything about the search as we are waiting for VBB3's revised search, VBB3.2.

Got ya, thanks. But how about a forum for just the website stuff? It may not be too popular or active, but it keeps posts like this in them, and not on the other forums.

Not understanding you. The FAQ Board is the place to go through also when you have a problem because it might already be answered.

What websites? You will get the hang of searching. It is really easy once you get the hang of it. The FAQ board has some good stuff in it too.

EDIT: IROC beat me to it

You are in that section. ThirdGen.Org doesn't have Non-Tech, always read the Important/Useful posts.

Just helping out here. Even if the minimum search word were changed to 2 words to allow the t5 word to work and Dirk re-indexed the search, your sentence has several words of what vB calls "bad words" and makes up a bad words list. Words on that list are ignored as they contain common, unnecessary, search words. Words like how, can, the, etc. are currently on that list. If you do a search and use how can the, you will find no results as those words are ignored. Those words do not help when searching. You will need to use more descriptive terms. Sometimes, yes, it's not easy.

I found the 3 characters or less rule annoying too....but theres a easy way around it!

add * to take up space until your over the 3 characters. Try t5**.I did and found 2371 matches on the trans board.

I don't think it's that easy. Doing a t5* will end up picking up t56 entries. From your results, you may have noticed several threads with no mention of t5/t-5, but did have t-56/t56.

Of course doing the above works in a way because both manual transmissions are often mentioned in the same threads.

I'm just saying that is not really a way around the 3 letter minimum search limit. You can't so easily get around such a limit because of what vB is recording from posts/threads (search criteria) to begin with. Since the search system on this version of vB doesn't record words from posts/threads that are less than what the minimum letter search is set at when posts are made/modified, the search results won't be much help. I'm not an expert and I might be wrong, but that was my understanding of the search feature.

You dont have to put the * last, try *56* or **56 or whatever combination. It takes up space the get around the 3 or more rule and is better than nothing!

But he wanted t5, instead of t56/t-56. Something like t*5 may bring up some, along with a lot of junk. It will also miss, I'm sure, a ton of posts from users only typing t5 in their message.

I'm just saying I don't think you can get around the 3 minimum rule. The way the software performs a search is probably different from what most people assume. The software builds a search index database that is in part based around what the admin sets the minimum character limit. If a word in a post really is shorter than the limit, it doesn't get included in the database when the post is created, so it can't be found when you do a search because it's not searching the post table database. You can't find something that isn't there. Atleast that's my understanding.

thanks.
