Why is this happening?
If I am looking through a long search or take too long to write a reply to a post the site logs me off. I then have to log back in and start over. The problem is not forum specific or length of time specific. It isn't fun when I hit POST and I get a message that says I have to log in when I already was.

The system keeps track of your activity. Each time you click on a link inside the forums, the 20 minute timer is reset. If 20 minutes have passed and the system hasn't seen any activity from you, it considers your session closed. So if you take 20 minutes to reply to a message, the system will consider your session closed. This is normal behavior for most vBulletin based forums that I'm aware of. This feature also determines what is "new" and what is "old", as far as threads and posts.
Because you are being prompted to log back in, it sounds like you are not using the "Remember Me" option when you sign in. If you did, you would not have to enter your user name and password after you closed your browser, or 20 minutes have passed.

So as long as "Remember Me" is on I can go around as long as I need and won't be signed off? Even if I am reading a post that is 5+ pages long.

If you use Remember Me and your machine accepts the cookie from TGO, yes, you won't have to enter your user name and password if you're inactive for 20+ minutes or close your browser window.
