Re: anyone else

The down for maintenance on Friday was a notice due to the backup and transfer of the database. The rest of the days where due to DNS changes as they populated.

What is defined as "serious problems"? Seems very broad. We're aware of the email notification (email server) issue, as well as a performance problem.

Re: anyone else

Very slow here.

Nearly 30 seconds to load each page. Feels like the old 28k days.

Re: anyone else

yes, long long periods to load each page. no e-mail notification. getting logged out without signing out. pages not populating. site is basically locking up for the last couple days. good analogy....the old 28K days.

Re: anyone else

dont forget some buttons not loading and things not loading completely

especially on default style view in which has the problem of having the functions across the top being the same gray color as the background, so you cant see them

classic view is alot better but some things dont completely load in it either

must have been a real crazy maintainence session heh

i dont have any very noticeable page loading problems, with my cable connection anyways

but some small things dont load completely however

Re: anyone else

I was on this site earlier today around 10 a.m.

Things were somewhat smoother. Not great. But much better than right now.

I have been coming to this site since Christmas 1998.

Up until the change over to the new owners, the most number of people on line you would normally see would be 250-400 with about 2/3 of that members.

Since the changeover, the number on-line has skyrocketed. Hmmm.

I sincerely find it hard to believe there are 875 people on line as I came here a few minutes ago. 90 members and 785 guests. This morning the number was about 400.

1,340 on line June 4, 2006.

The new owners have loosed Google ads on the site.

Is it possible the Google ads are causing the site slowdown?

I know for a fact my virus protection fights Google ads.

I had a somewhat similar problem about 10 months ago on this site. Every other site loaded great then, as now. However thirdgen.org was like pulling teeth to get it to load.

Back then, I even went as far as to turn off my virus protection to be able to visit here. Loaded much faster. However, I felt very wary doing so.

Some say I have a lousy virus protection (Norton) and a better version would allow the google ads to load.

Maybe the google ads should not try to be so intrusive and load there cookie/spyware into my computer.

I came to this site this week from my work computer. Different virus protection. SLIGHTLY faster loading (but work has much higher internet speed-500k or something like that).

Any other ideas?

It now takes almost three times as long as normal to visit the forums I normally do. I don't have time for that.

Please, PLEASE, P-L-E-A-S-E do something to correct the situation.

A good test would be to turn off the google ads for a day or two and see if things speed up for most everyone.

Please understand I am not bitching for the sake of bitching. I have given money (more than once) to this site in the past and would continue to do so if asked.

But look at CamaroZ28.com and there, in the thirdgen forum you will see a few others having these problems.

HELP

Re: anyone else

9:35-ish a.m. central time. Sunday morning. Slow-SLow-SLOw-SLOW

73 members and 845 guests for a total of 918 online.

Sorry, but unless things have changed a great deal in the recent past, there are not 918 "real" people on this site this time of day on a Sunday morning.

A couple years ago, the numbers this time of day on a Sunday would be 100-200, maximum.

Could this be part of the problem?

The number of reported connections to the forums (members and guests) is not exactly relative to how busy the server is. What those connections are doing is much more important. You can have 1 connection simply browsing the forum, viewing 1 thread, within a ~ 20 minute time period and be considered "active". That does not cause a great deal of resources. It is what those connections are doing, and how often they're doing it, that really matters.

That said, the number is correct. Guests can be unregistered users, not logged in users, or "bots". This is normal. Most forums have these. It's part of the Internet.

One thing that did increase the amount of reported users is the cookie timeout being extended (if I recall correctly). It currently is set to 20 minutes. That means that a user can be on the forum, and as long as they're clicking on an internal link each 19 minutes and 59 seconds, they will be considered "active" and included in the online figures.

While some forums may increase the cookie timeout period to simply artificially inflate their online figures, there is also a legitimate reason. I do know that at one time we got some complaints from members stating that the original 15 minute timeout session was too short. If a member came on the forum, and got called away, or browsed to another website through a link on TGO, if they didn't come back to TGO's forums within that 15 minutes, the forums would reset all of their "new" post counters, making it more difficult for the member to easily see what really is new and what was old, post content wise.

Re: anyone else

It appears things are quite a bit better.

Opening a post now takes about 15 seconds (versus twice that before), near what it was before the site went down a few days ago.

Thanks for making the situation better.

I would not put much stock in the reported number of users either,......... I just quickly counted the number of guests in each chat room and came up with around 570. The site reports 887 ACTIVE users.

I realize that there is much more to Third Gen than the forums - but I find it VERY hard to believe there is almost another 400 people browsing the rides and reading tech articles.

Do you actually believe TGO "fixed" that number to make TGO look better than it is? Sorry, but you would be incorrect as anyone that TGO may try to impress (businesses) would likely be looking at more than simply a number like that. The number is simply guaging active "connections", regardless of what they are.

As I stated above:

Guests can be unregistered users, not logged in users, or "bots". This is normal. Most forums have these. It's part of the Internet.
It has been no secret that we get lots of "bots"/"spiders" that add to the list. Just about every popular forum/website has this.

That aside, as you started to state, you (regular member) cannot see all active users online by simply counting users in the "chat" area (forums). This does not take into account those on the technical articles (which actually is a popular section on this site and it is advertised), members who are on the forums but NOT inside a "chat" (forum) area - (usercp, profile, PM'ing, searching, etc.), and members who are in an undefined area.

I don't see the need or purpose to debate the figure that the forums are showing as active users. It's not a "fixed" number built on some scale or percentage.
