Site slow due to ads loading

I'm using Firefox because IE won't load at all. The pages start to load, I get the header, but the page won't load. It continuously says loading ads.doubleclick.net and google-analytics.com, etc. I'm sure someone is already looking into this, but just a heads up that the ads are killing this site!

Re: Site slow due to ads loading

Just tough I'd chime in. I've been having the same problems for awhile too. I know part of it is that I live in town with cable hook up and during peak times you can tell there's a strain on the system. But still this is the slowest site I frequent by a long shot but it wasn't allways like that .It's to the point where I'm afraid of using the search feature because of the loading time. I did notice a little increase when I upgraded to 15mbps from 10 mbps. But for a extra 5 bucks a month it wasn't worth it just to help out this web site loading (couldn't tell a difference in other sites). Also I'm running IE 6 as I just can't get to use to IE 7 but I have tried 7 on my home network with no luck.

Yes, the ads are slowing the site down terribly. You should see how slow it is with 1mbps service (the fastest available where I live).

Re: Site slow due to ads loading

I think the site was a little slower than normal yesterday during the afternoon/evening, and I traced it to some intermittent packet loss that appeared to be originating around Level3 and beyond. However, I did not receive any reports or notices from others members about this.

I also have not personally experienced any speed issue outside of the above issue, which was yesterday. The ads are loading fine for me with no stalling. I can even view the website on my PDA (which obviously is no workhorse machine).

Are any of you using some sort of 3rd party software? Ad-blocking software?

Ad-ware but it seems to be just slower than normal on this site.

Re: Site slow due to ads loading

Please define what exactly you mean by "slow". There can be several different cases of "slow" which are completely different.

1) "Slow" as in graphics on this webpage load slowly?
2) "Slow" as in while you're typing a response to a post in the message box, the typed letters take a while to appear on your screen?
3) "Slow" as in clicking on an internal link (such as a thread in the forum index), it takes a considerable amount of time before the requested link begins to progress?

Scott, are you still seeing the same issues you described?

Re: Site slow due to ads loading

I'm not sure what the others are experiencing the exact thing but for me the top will load right above post reply (they load somewhat fast) then I'll get the explore symbol down in the left corner and it says done. then anywhere from 3-15 seconds the rest of the page is loaded which the whole page shows up at once not like the old 28k modems. it seems to be getting worst, that lately I've been having at least two pages up. which then I'll click on one thirdgen and click on another to past the time. I hope this helps but like I said i'm not sure if this problem is only me with the two part page load .

I think I understand your issue. When you speak about the top section loading fast (above the Post Reply), you mean the first Post Reply button. So you don't see the content of the actual thread, and the replies, at that time.

I believe this has something to do with your browser's rendering and certain elements - such as table usage. FireFox tends to display the page as it's loading, while IE tends to wait until the enter page is finished loading (in certain cases).

I'll look into it, but I'm not certain what can be done. Your connection speed factors here as well. For reference, I had a few streams using my bandwidth, and while doing a hard-refresh of this thread, it took FireFox just under 10 seconds to completely load everything from scratch (no cache) which included ads, images, etc.

With the way IE and FireFox render differently, I could start reading the contents of the thread using FireFox while the thread continues to load, whereas with IE, I have to wait.

I'll try installing fire fox and let you know if that helps

whenever I test my speed I usally get about 8mps download and 1.5 upload from a New York city sever that's about 350 miles away. and for the ten seconds to load is that normal for all web sites you visit, just about all webs I go to take about 2-3 seconds to load everything except for maybe ebay when I have the "200" items per page clicked I know right now I need to wipe the hard drive clean with a fresh install. then sites take 1-2 seconds to load

With the way IE and FireFox render differently, I could start reading the contents of the thread using FireFox while the thread continues to load, whereas with IE, I have to wait.

I was just wondering if the ad program is set up for a delay this way you have to look at the ads for a few seconds, which if I was the programer I'd probally do it that way?

Honestly, no. I've actually been working on the templates since this thread was updated to see if I can find something that may resolve or improve the issue.

Re: Site slow due to ads loading

well I just installed fire fox and like you said it will let you look at the page when it's loading but is still taking 10-15 seconds to load. one other thing when I went to click on the home page from the search engine it seemed to take longer than normal with fire fox ( I did not want to import anything ) yet when I went to click on the message board link it loaded faster than I've seen in a long time.

So basically I can wait for the page to load with ie or try and get use to fire fox again which did take the reply page a bit to load all the tools but I think it would of been the same amount of time ie would of took. stair at things loading or ads hmmm tough choice but seeing how i usually just read here i give fire fox a run. hay there's no spell cheker on fire fox. is there anyway to make it more than five choices when you miss spell a word? sometimes my spelling is so far of that the word i'm trying to spell is at the bottom of ie spell checker list,

o'well thanks for the heads up on fire fox and I'll give it a try for a few days till I wipe this girl clean (really not looking forword to that).

Re: Site slow due to ads loading

The main difference is that with IE, you have to wait for a thread to finish loading before you can read any of the contents of that thread. With FireFox, it tends to start to display the thread's contents as it's being loaded. Which means that while using FireFox, you can start reading the thread while FireFox is still loading the page.

Again, at that point, your connection speed to the server also plays a factor.

I'm not so sure that it taking about 10-15 seconds to finish loading is an issue. It is loading several posts (albeit largely text), images, avatars, ads, etc. You are on the east coast, while our servers are on the west coast. I realize eBay is also on the west coast, but we aren't eBay nor do we have eBay's resources. I don't think taking 10-15 seconds to completely load a page is really terrible. I've seen far worse from other websites.

My bigger concern is that with IE, it stalls just before it loads the posts, so IE users are forced to wait it out that entire 10-seconds before they can really do anything. Since we have a lot of IE users, and suggesting FireFox as an answer isn't exactly an appropriate fix, I hope we can find out why IE is doing this, and perhaps work on it.

But we're looking into it.

Thanks.

Bump back from the Dead

Well, I have noticed IE and Firefox stall out way too much on my end, and i got the best DSL package in my area.

I have gotten "Server taking to long to respond" (which is a firefox thing) or
" Connection reset by server" (yet another firefox thing)

IE has stalled on me and crashed out half the time i try to come to thirdgen.

The ad's are part of the issuse, so is the computer you use, depending on your computers speed and your Service Provider's Net speed, thirdgen will be slow.

My computer is no work of art, its built from 5 other computers, and is out of date lol, but its the best i have

Well, just thought i would say something, because i have been having the same problems.

Re: Site slow due to ads loading

The issue just posted is a new issue, which is not exactly related to the ads discussed in this topic, that we're looking into, which started just recently.

Thanks.

I imagine most, if not all, are affected. As I said above, we are aware of this new issue and we are currently working on it. There isn't much of a need to post "me too"s since we are aware there is an issue that is impacting our members.

Thanks for your patience.

If it really took 3 minutes to load the forum, then you likely have an issue on your end. I've been working on the site throughout this afternoon and have experienced no such issue to anywhere near that degree. The server does not treat my requests with any more priority than yours.

In addition, there has been no recent reports sent to us about such a drastic performance issue as you describe above.

Re: Site slow due to ads loading

A few days ago, I had this issue, but not yesterday or today. I noticed on Wednesday (I think) the page would start to load and never finish. After a few minutes I decided to browse other forums. As stated above, you knew about this. I don't appear to be having the problem today.
