User Icons

I'm not sure what you call it, but on other boards I use, the users are allowed to have an icon underneath their name in a post.... is this possible with the new software?

I know what u are talking about but they are not enabled on this board because the Admin doesn't want to keep up with the crazy things the Members might put in there, which makes sense.

Yeah... I found where it's set up... it's called AVATAR... I think it would be a cool enhancement to the site... but I know there are other priorities first (getting rid of those nasty icons). I think it would be cool... as long as you could limit to a certain size and stuff... some peoples sig pics are getting out of hand... they are WAY too big!

I'm considering turning on user avatars and disallowing images from sigs but I KNOW it'll turn into a huge headache... if people are unable to shrink their images for their sigs so they aren't so huge, imagine them trying to make a really small avatar

I'm a graphic artist and webdeveloper freelance, Why not set some guidelines,

A standard for sig images
325x75 would be a good sig standard and as far as avatars either 42x42 or 64x64.

Just a thought and I'd suggest limiting how many lines are in the sigs, people detailign the cars life story takt up half the page IE:

MIKE:

Unfortunately for sigs you can't specify a size limit of the sig or the images.

It's supposed to be a feature in a new version of the VBB.

You can always go in and turn off "Show user's signatures in their posts?" in the user CP if it really annoys you

About Avatars: I may just upload a whole bunch for people to pick from instead of letting people UL their own. But I haven't quite decided what to do about those yet

If I had to pick between Avatars and Sigs, I would pick Avatar for sure... it is way better because you can imediately identify who the post is from. On other sites I use they have it set up so that only users with over 250 posts can modify their Avatar. I think this is good because anyone who has completed 250 posts should have a good understanding of what not to do. For users that are under 250, they are assigned a default Avatar which changes once they reach certain levels. The only potential problem is that it might create an elitist feeling, but I'm not sure if that is entirely bad.

I think you should make the users's earn the right to have Avatar (and limit sigs somehow).

Dirk, I'm glad your using PHP makes me think this site isn't so old. BUt you can set an image limit, just right a damn rule and tell people to obey it.

I agree with the size limit thing. Personally I used to have a larger pic, but reletivly small.
I think the ads on the top of each page should be about the limit, thats what i made mine too. I personally would prefer a faster loading page over Huge pix.
If someone wants to show off their car they can make a link to their members ride page.

Unfortunately I own several cars so mine is kind of large anyway...

I don't think Avatars will be a problem because you can VB allows you to limit the size of the image.

Avatars are now working. There are 946 premade avatars you can use. If you want to upload your own, it can't be bigger than 20K in size and it can't be larger than 64X64 pixels.

I wish I could limit sig sizes but I can't. Next version of VBB should allow the admin to limit sigs!

Where do you access the Avatars? I don't see it in the "UserCP". My sig is 22k is that ok? I can compress it.
