1984 Camaro complete restoration and more!

Hi Everyone,

I don't think I ever create a thread on here about my car.

I've owned this 84 Camaro since around 92 or so, it's was a basic V6 pretty much no option car.

I drove this car to work every day for quite a few years, and the V6 finally gave out. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with the car, and it sat in my garage for about a year. I finally decided that I was going to restore, it and make it better than it was to start with. I bought a 92Z and used that as my donor car. I then proceeded to swap almost everything over to my car, pulled the motor/tranny, added the GFX, replaced the dash etc.

It took about 5 years to get the car where it is today, but I think it turned out pretty good.

How she looked originally:

Some pics during the restoration:

Right after removing the V6

All of the 92 wiring in place

After the Paint!

I love LEDs, and these tail lights were for sure getting a retro

Same with the dash, here is the 92 Cluster lit up with LED strips

I hated the dim stock headlights, so I installed HID projectors. You can also see my LED front turn signals, I custom made these.

Re: My 1984 Camaro

For comparison of the headlights

Here are the stock lights going down my driveway, just terrible

Now here are the HIDs, notice the cutoff. No blinding other drivers at all

Re: My 1984 Camaro

If you guys like how the car turned out, I would really appreciate it if you click the link in my sig and then 'Like' my car on that site. I have a long ways to go to get to first place, so I'm hoping all you third gen owners will help me beat the 5th gen.

Thanks!
Chris

The projectors I got from the retrofitsource, they normally don't sell already assembled systems. But one of their guys was doing a side project for someone else, and when I emailed them asking some questions about retrofitting. The guy he was making them for backed out, so I just snatched them up

For the LEDs, check out this build thread. I pretty much show the process from start to finish.

Re: My 1984 Camaro

Since it's going to be awhile before I get new wheels, I thought I would try and fix my current ones up a bit.

So I decided to try out the whole plasta-dip thing I've been reading everywhere. To my surprised they really turned out good!! My wheels had a lot of discoloration, and some curb rash, the plasta-dip hides almost all of it. It looks like I got new wheels.

What I love the most about this stuff, when I get tired of it. I can just peal it off!

I got them from www.retrofitsource.com

They normally don't sell completed retros, but one of the guys was doing a set on the side for someone else. I had emailed them with some questions about how to retrofit into a 4x6 and he told me he had some that a guy just backed out on. So I snatched them up. Saved me from having to trial/error in the retrofit.

I bet if you email them, you can find someone wanting to do a set for you.

Re: My 1984 Camaro

So this weekend I decided to add some exhaust tips.
I looked everywhere online for some that would our exhaust, and not having them cost $50+ for each one.

Well just by chance, I found these on Walmart's website for $12.99. I think they look pretty good and they should last until I upgrade the entire exhaust system.

I thought I would add some pictures of the start of the audio system.

I built a custom fiberglass box, to hold 2 12 IDQV4's being run off a MMATS 1400.1

Ya, I've always like that wing. I know it was never very popular for some reason, but I think it looks great and gives the car a little bit more modern look. Plus I love that it has the brake light too, something the tall wing doesn't have.

3-21-14:
Small Updates since last time.
Been working on my LED retro of the foglights.

I had previously bought the plug/play type bulbs, but they weren't that bright and had a hotspot I didn't like.

So here is the comparison.

Plug/play on the left, my retro on the right. Still need to build the other side.

You can see more images here.

Update: 5/14/14

Phase 2 of my audio build is done!
My new kickpods, and amp are installed.

These actually turned out to be pretty easy to build, if you've ever considered doing it yourself, I have written a tutorial to help guide you through it.

How did you do the led strips for your gauges? I did LED bulbs and am pretty unhappy with the results. The brightness is not consistant like yours.

Sorry just saw this reply,
I bought some LED strips from superbrightLEDs, and also some empty 192 socket bases.

The strips can be cut to size, I think you can cut them down to only 3 LEDs if you need it.

So I cut the length of strips that I needed, then ran some wire from the strips to the empty bases, and then just plugged the bases into the OEM connectors.

You can kind of see it this pic, you can see the bases on the lower left and lower right

Re: My 1984 Camaro

Since I put in the HID projectors, light output has not been a problem.
But one thing that bothered me was the stock hi-beams. They just didn't look good next to the projectors.

I didn't really want to spend money on another set of real projectors, so I decided to just use those 'fake' projectors that I already had. Then instead of putting a real bulb in them, I used an LED one. Just for looks, and I think it looks much better than than the halogen type sealed beams that I had in there.

Forget it, I've contributed a lot to this forum over the years and didn't think throwing it out there would be some reportable offense. If that's the case, I don't even want it.

Just go back to seeing the same cars getting nominated each month.
Who said anything about reporting anybody? He said he had to ask about the rules...?

hi first time on this forum. i just have one question for you, my brother-in-law has a 1984 camaro berlinetta. now he cannot find parts for the car that he desperately needs, i was wondering if the car you used to build your camaro, could work for my brother? or better yet do you know of anyone that might have parts for that specific kind of car. thank you and have a nice day

Re: My 1984 Camaro

Awesome car. Mine looks like something out of a wrecking yard compared to yours. It's on jack stands right now getting some serious overhaul done. Turbo 400, Ford 9", some engine work, interior cleaning, etc. Gonna be in the garage a while, but as soon as I'm done I'd like to see yours in person. I'm not too far from you. Federal Way. Is that original paint? If not, where did you get it done?
