lowering the gas tank question on a 92 Convertible
Hi I have a 92 camaro rs 305 convertible and I was wondering what is the best way to lower the gas tank. Car has been sitting in my garage and I turned it on and it just shut off. I tried to turn it on but I don't hear the fuel pump kicking in. It cranks but it just doesn't want to turn on. I want to clean the gas tank and change the fuel pump. And I was just wondering if anyone has any tips I can use.
Re: lowering the gas tank question on a 92 Convertible
I already looked at youtube but I've only seen video's of hard tops or t-tops. I haven't seen a convertible video yet with a gas tank removal. And I was just wondering if it's the same way to lower it? I don't get the hack part what do you mean by hacking my car?
Re: lowering the gas tank question on a 92 Convertible
I don't think there is any difference.
You need to drop the rear end (can still be connected to the drive shaft, but lowered as far as it can go with the shocks and track arm removed), as well as the exhaust, to get the tank out.
Note that my aftermarket exhaust did not drop far enough. I had to cut it off since they gave no provision to remove the muffler (had it re-welded back together the next day). Stock exhaust should be fine from everything I see, though.

You'll be able to have decent access to inside the tank when you drop it. The hole is 4-5 inches wide, I think?
That image is of a hack job people call a 'trap door' to access the fuel pump. Every once in a blue moon someone does a good job of it, but by the time that happens they could have just dropped the tank.
Re: lowering the gas tank question on a 92 Convertible
You may want to check any fuel pump fuses/relays for functionality before dropping the tank. You may get lucky and find that you don't actually need a pump.
Re: lowering the gas tank question on a 92 Convertible
Just did mine, have to remove or at least drop the exhaust as far as possible, its easier to remove the rear axle because you need some room to be able to wiggle the tank out. you have to disconnect the shocks, lower control arms, panhard bar and disconnect the brake line at the t block on the rear end housing. As long as the bolts aren't rusted, its not too bad of a job and can be done in a day.
Re: lowering the gas tank question on a 92 Convertible
Please don't hack your car I've had to help a few guys who have bought irocs and gta t/as and people use a saws-all to cut the area above the pump lock ring and one cut the metal lines coming out of the round pump assembly and used rubber gas line and hose clamps to put it back together. It was a leaking disaster and was the reason the guy sold the car.
Re: lowering the gas tank question on a 92 Convertible
Well when my pump went out I removed the tank . Really hard job to do yourself in a driveway especially if u have the stock flow masters. Luckily for me i got rid of the fm and just put a single muffler on it so it was out of the way. Next u gotta remove the pan hard bar and i think the other bar too don't remember. Then remove the two fuel tank straps.. Then u have to lift the rear of the car up as far as you can, once its up in the air, probably the hardest part is to wiggle the damn tank out and the fuel tank neck not to mention putting it back in... good luck...... Pretty hard to do when you have a tiny jack and two tiny jack stands and the car is moving side to side. Pretty scary but i got it out. Well i removed the tank finally and i tested the fp and it was dead. Went and bought a new fp at az, came back home and tested my old pump again and it was working.. Dont do what i did...Was low on funds so my broke self returned the fp and got my cash back. Put the old fp back on , then put everything back in. Hardest was putting the tank in and getting the neck to go in while car is like 4 ft in the air moving side to side..Well the fp didn't fail me for like 3 days, then on the fourth day i took a long trip to a friends house , then when i go to start i dont hear my fp prime..........i had no tools no nothing and i needed to get home. went to auto zone again and got a new fp and a few gas hoses... So i did the hack job with a pair of tin snips in less then an hour and i was on my wayy been good ever since. Do the job right the first time... Don't cheap out.
