Tech / General EngineIs your car making a strange sound or won't start? Thinking of adding power with a new combination? Need other technical information or engine specific advice? Don't see another board for your problem? Post it here!
My best guess is the charcoal cannister, but I cannot find a nipple/connector on the cannister that is clearly missing a line.
Could the nipple have snapped-off clean on the top side of that multi-connector on top of the cannister?
I was doing some spot-cleaning on the engine bay this afternoon when I spotted the orphan hose.
Its obvious that the orphan hose used to be connected at one end to the two-way connector shown in the pic. But where does the other end go? The other end of the hose looks mightily degraded, and probably hasn't been properly connected to anything in a long time.
Help and suggestions would be much appreciated.
Orphan hose:
(the left arrow points to the end of the hose that was recently connected to the two-way multi-connector --- the middle arrow is the nipple that the orphan used to be connected to --- the right arrow is the mystery-end of the hose that I'm trying to figure out where it used to go)
This pic shows the source for the hose that leads to the two-way connector that the orphan had been connected to:
The "source" in your second photo is for the HVAC system.
Your orphan hose most likely goes to the vacuum reservoir that's located under the charcoal canister (you'll have to look up from under the car to see it. The reservoir looks like a small cannonball).
It appears your car does not have cruise control, no?
See attached. Even though the attachments show the cruise control, the vacuum line routing and vacuum tank (reservoir) still applies to the HVAC system.
I have a sense now of the size and position of the "cannonball." I understand now why my quick blind hand-probe didn't discover anything. I was feeling for a nipple right at the bottom circumference of the cannister. Looks like the cannoball is going to require a good bit further reach.
Speaking of that "one-way valve," I snapped-off the tit that feeds the HVAC when I was futzing with stripping the remnants of the rotten cannonball line off it. I was a wee bit proud of myself that I was able to identify the part, and get a replacement in less than an hour from the local brick-and-mortar. http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/d...m+check+valve#
I replaced the hose between the check valve to the three-way connector near the charcoal cannister. One of the ends of the three-way is capped, which renders the connector pretty pointless. I'm sure I could have just made a straight run from the check valve to the cannoball. But, I figured I would leave it as "original" as I could. Somebody asked about "cruise control, so I guess that capped tit would feed the cruise control if the car were so-equipped? Also, of course, replaced the hose from the three way to the cannonball.
While I was at it, I installed a fresh bit of hose between intake manifold "source" nipple and the check valve. The existing hose was a PO's work, and was under-sized anyway. After I installed that bit of hose, I realized that bit had the works "MADE IN" stenciled on it. I may go back and install a slightly longer chunk of hose that that fully displays "MADE IN USA." Just because I can.
The $4 replacement check-valve is less-conspicuously labeled "MADE IN CHINA." I tested it by sucking-on and blowing-on all the ****. Seems to work OK.
BEST OF ALL:
When I started the car, I noticed a much more "even" idle. I took it out for a thirty-minute test drive, and pushed it as much as I could during school bus hours. I don't want to get prematurely excited, but there was no stumbling" or "stuttering" today. I'm pretty excited about that. If you've been following my thread at https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...wner-88-a.html you know the "stumbling" issue has been the thing that probably has most put me off on this car. If I've serenditously solved that issue, I'm over the moon! There, when I was thinking the worst (fuel pump) for all these months, could it really be just a perished vacuum line??? Keeping my fingers and toes crossed, and thinking about other stuff to tackle before the winter arrives.
