Not trying to poop on your thread..All I'm saying is that in this day n age where we have 300hp minivans running around it really doesn't matter now does it,,,honestly 205h 230 HP even the 350 at 245hp,,,,that's just not very much nowadays..
Get a game plan together that will put you anywhere from 350-450hp and your back on a level playing field....
i didn't ask if it was fast. when i wanna go fast i get my other car out of the hauler all i asked what the difference between the two engines were. i race usmts modifieds so i know what hp and tq is
91-92 Speed Density Lb9s all got the "350" cam. The difference was in the exhaust manifolds and the dual cat option on the 5spd models. It helped to make 25 more HP but honestly I'm pretty sure those LB9s made more than the advertised 205 HP.
I have put headman mid length headers with the headman y pipe and a 2 chamber flowmaster with no cat so I'm sure that has brought it up a little. The little car runs good and always has

That's interesting - I hadn't realized that until you said it and I check the parts book.
Cam was the same with those motors those years but different from prior years. Any idea what the difference was?
Compression ratios were the same, iirc same heads
Looks like TPI's could come either with a single cat 2.25" exhaust (rated at 205 HP) or the dual cat 2.75" exhaust (rated at 230 HP).
They had different exhaust ?
The ecms were the same man vs auto calibrations were different .
Uhhh no,,different ecm's for different year's,,,there not all the same...Some lb9's had 2 cat's some had 1,,,,,hence "different exhausts" as in not the same...

I think the exhaust manifolds are the same as by buddy has a 92 TPI and my 91 look exactly the same. He has the dual cat system. So if I read this info right the only difference is the dual cat system with the larger pipe. If that is the case I am thinking by just doing a complete exhaust you could theoretically gain 50+ HP?
Gm only list one cam number for the 305 and 350 so the cams were the same they used a small cam in the 80s the only thing I can find different is the exhaust
part#;s 10111773 10066049 10088155 14094097 14088843.......All these cams are lb9 cams,,,and they are all different specs,,and theyre all teeny tiny inho
The difference is primarily the exhaust. If you look up the exhaust in the GM parts catalog, the higher output 305 used the same exhaust as the 350. The lower output version used different manifolds, a single cat, and I want to say even the TBI intermediate pipe, muffler, and tail pipes.
The lower output cars usually didn't come with 245/50R16 tires either. I wouldn't be too surprised if they have a different memcal with a speed limiter, and potentially other details as well.
Very informative thank you. my car did come from the factory with 235/55/16 instead of the 245/50/16 my car runs well with the headers and y pipe it also has a chip and under drive pullys. And I will doing a gear change soon. Thank you everyone for the info
Don't know what gears you have,,but mine had 3.42 before the 1st rear broke...I replaced it with a recycled rear with 2.73s,,big mistake..The car slowed down into the low 16in the 1/4..It didn't take long to tear that rear up,,so I rebuilt the the rear correctly with 3.42s,,performance restored..If I were good it again it would have 3.73s,,I've ridden in and driven 3.73 5.0l 3rd gens and IMHO that's the perfect ration for the 5.0l..
On a side note,,we've also installed 3.73s in a friends 89roc with a 350..Big mistake,,,that was way to much gear for for a 350,,turned it into a tire burner. Good luck,,sorry about the previous posts..
It has 2.73 in it now I'm thinking about putting 3.42. I do all my own rear end setups as I mention before I race modified dirt cars so over the years I've learned to do most everything except building transmissions and painting nice cars. I don't car how fast the car is I was just wondering what the difference between the two were and I think I have got my answer. I appreciate your info
3.42s probably the perfect gear for these cars. I like my 3.73s it just that 1-2 gear is so close it will sometimes spin rite through 1st and into second. I have a spare set of 3.23s I may try next time or maybe go with 3.42s myself. Surprisingly the 3.73s didn't really hurt my gas mileage at all.
I have a set of 4.10s out of an old race race car that are practically brand new every other gear that I have are for. A ford 9in everything from the mid 2s to the mid 7s and prob about 6 or 7 sets of 6.50
