History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
I have found a 1986 trans am with Recaro seats. It is white with tan int. I thought they stopped making Recaro TAs in 84. We're the seats an option in 86? I'm going to look at he car tomorrow. The only thing I can think is maybe it's a base MSE which would be very cool or the seats were swapped in along time ago. The guy selling it is the third owner and met the original owner and said that was, the way it came from the factory and the second owner was the sellers brother.
The seats were optional in 85/86 as well, though they were fabric with no piping unlike the earlier ones. Look for RPO code AS5. Not sure about the production numbers, but they are pretty unusual.
I had a set in my '84 15th anniversary TA and I honestly disliked the feel, they are very stiff as compared to regular TA / GTA seats. But they look fantastic when they are nice and do hold you in place.
The Recaro Trans Am edition had a RPO code of Y84. That is the same RPO code that GM later reused in 1987-1992 for the GTA. Recaro Trans AMs were black with some specific appearance features along with the Recaro seats.
After 1984, while there no long was a Recaro Trans Am edition Y84, the Recaro seats continued to be an option on the Trans Am as indicated by RPO code AS5 as ev305tpi mentioned.
So what you're looking at is a 1986 Trans Am with the optional Recaro seats but not the Recaro Trans Am Y84.

Re: 1986 Recaro trans am
I still kick myself for not taking a second look at a set of Recaro seats I saw in a junkyard... They were torn up and rough shape, but nothing can't be fixed IMHO, they were not beyond repair...
Did the 85-86 Recaro's get the "RECARO" door handle sticker? Or was that only 82-84?

I also have a Red1986 TRANS AM with the Recaro seats (Tan with the grey (charcoal) insets and it also has the Digital dash. Really trying to find out how many of these where produced. The seats are out of the car right now because they are in need of repair and I didn't want to damage them any further.

Re: 1986 Recaro trans am
Honestly the only possibility you might have is contacting Jim Mattison at PHS for production information... If you get something post it here. I know they are pretty uncommon. The GTA (which replaced the Recaro) was marketed better and really had better sales for production. IF there is no Y84 in 1985 & 1986, All you really need is the RPO for the seats...

I do have the option list for my car . And thank you so much for the feedback and the lead. I will post when I get more info.
Thank you
W pair of these Recaro's in Tan and Charcoal for sale but since i'm new to the forum i can't list them in the classifieds for at least 2 weeks. You wont find anything like these. They've been in dry storage, never UN-boxed from their original Recaro boxes until i had to inspect and take photos of them last week. My dad purchased them for a street rod project back in 1988 which has remained unfinished. He passed away in January of this year which is why i'm selling them. They were ordered through a dealership on his Snap-On-Tool route and sat in storage for 2 years until one of his customers made him aware that they were for sale. These are for a 1985 or 1986 Trans Am but the car was totaled weeks before the seats arrived. From what i've researched i believe the RPO #'s are RPO AS5 and RPO B20 .
I know what they're worth and what it takes to restore a pair of these and for a brand new N.O.S pair which is as rare as it gets.. i'm asking 2400.00 firm plus 200.00 shipping.
You're right, it probably would cost about the same but then again these are brand new original factory seats. I don't think it gets any better when it comes to the original stitch work and correct fabric. I'll let em ride for a few weeks and then place them in the classifieds here, but in the meantime they will be available on Ebay. I purchased new leather seat covers a few years back for my 1997 Hendrick SS Camaro and they just aren't like the originals.
I believe the RPO code is AQ9,I know that it's been said that they are AS5,but I cannot find anything for 85-86 with a RPO code AS5(as far as the seats go)

Yes Sir, i just made them available. Many are interested but i need offers, reasonable offers that is They are on Ebay but i'd rather do a deal hear because it would save us both some loot. P-pal preferred. I'll provide my email address if anyone is serious and we can go from there. BTW my name is not really Robbing Banks.. that would be incriminating lol
I know that its been a year. BUT, none the less, I thought yall would like to see these. Just picked them up. Good addition to my collection. They are dated 1985.
