700 R4 casing color

Can someone tell me if these transmissions on an 87 GTA were painted black? Mine is super flaky black and I am managing to get all the stuff off and am wondering if I should paint it again or not. Would prefer not to as paint and aluminum do not bond well but if there is a functional aspect such as better heat dissipation I would paint it again.

They were all bare aluminum. You most likely have a re-built unit.

Re: 700 R4 casing color

was tempted to paint my rebuilt trans when I put it in but figured it wouldn't hold up well on aluminum that heats and cools often. bare aluminum is the way to go

Re: 700 R4 casing color

Is there any one selling the rebuild DVD for 700R4 with the option to download it rather than wait for the actual DVD to be posted?
I need it quite urgently and would rather not wait for postage.

Re: 700 R4 casing color

Hiram Gutierez rebuilding a 4L60E is about as close as you're going to come to a complete video that's posted online.

Please note: the 4L60E is a later, electronic controlled version of the 700R4. The basic task of removing and reinstalling the guts is essentially the same. However, there are detailed differences between the two.

I would wait for a 700R4-specific rebuild video to arrive in the mail if you've never done this before. The risk here is the quality of the video content may or may not be up to your expectations.

Once you have a video, I'd strongly recommend you get these repair guides:

Amazon Amazon

Amazon Amazon

If you can find one, this is a good resource to have as well:

Re: 700 R4 casing color

IMO Bare alloy with metallic flakes over it followed by 2 layers of clear is the best look for the trany, and a nice trans am style gold oil pan underneath it. At least, thats what i did.

And don't forget to paint that torque converter/flex plate cover.
