Hi There,
Just had the car painted and due to $$ I agreed to put back on the various body parts other than the doors, fenders and hood. With my only "body" experience being taking off these rusty parts some years ago.
Roof rail-These were taken off by the body shop and appeared to be bent or twisted, but after positioning them properly and lining up the holes, they seemed OK.
However after putting in the screws I noticed that the gap between the roof and window pillar, and the top wall of the molding that will hold the new weatherstrip is not uniform. It has about a 1/2" gap in some areas and then narrows and then by the front windshield pillar there is hardly any gap at all.
I am thinking that this gap needs to be uniform all along the molding so the new weatherstrip would seal properly with the window and roof/pillar?
1. Is this correct and I need to somehow bend it to create this uniform gap?
2. How big should this gap be?
3. Also some of the foam backing on these were torn off in various areas and was wondering if I need to patch all these SOMEHOW?
4. Also, do I need to "seal" anything on these metal moldings b4 installing the weatherstrip?
thanks in advance for your assistance/expertise
tom
Calling all roof rail molding experts, junkyard parts pullers, weatherstrip installers, bodyshop guys, etc.
Please help with my issues if you can, as the time to correct/bend this is before I turn it over to the bodyshop to install/seal in the new weatherstrip which was part of my bodywork price.
thank you
tom
Sounds as if they were bent during or after removal. Either you or a good metal person should be able to carefully straighten.
You can remove the old adhesive foam tape with 3M adhesive remover and replace with this topper tape. The tape is the correct color, thickness and flexibility, but needs to be trimmed narrower by 1/4 inch.
I found this old post I made in 2017. In hindsight I found the Metro topper tape to be too thick for my hardtop car. Used a 3M foam rubber tape instead found at ULine.
And overall, found the Metro seals including rear hatch, doors, windows and hood seal to not be a good fitting product. I would not recommend Metro seals.
