Getting back into the 3rd gen drivers seat

Hey everyone,

Sold my 86 IROC like 8 years ago and im finally getting back into one this weekend. It’s a 1990 IROC, hardtop, 6 speed, 383. Has G92 and Gu5 RPO codes so I’m not sure exactly what rear end it has but should be pretty good. I searched online and saw this car sold in 2016 at Barret Jackson. Other than that if anyone has some knowledge about it would be great. I’m super excited to go get it as it looks really clean!

Re: Getting back into the 3rd gen drivers seat

You say it's got a 383, yet the hood and strut tower brace emblem both show 5.7. ...it's one thing to leave existing factory emblems, but both of those were put there on purpose. I'd be skeptical of a 383. I also don't like shaved door handles on a mostly stock appearing car.

BUT....looks very clean. Probably a really nice car. I think it'd all depend on the money. ...but still I'd be skeptical of that 383. Nothing wrong with a 5.7 at all....but it's the dishonesty. Kinda makes ya what else they're not telling you.

I’m guessing that it is still a 350 or the motor was stroked after the paint and body were done. Im hoping some one might recognize it and be able to tell me about it.

I would check on the authenticity of the 383 also, but with that said, I have built my 350 into a 383 and left all the 5.7 badges in place also. I have the paper work to back it up, but I left the 5.7 badges in place because they came on the car, and also it's kind of a sleeper factor, unless you hear it idle.

Re: Getting back into the 3rd gen drivers seat

To verify 383 I could get paperwork (which doesn’t really verify it), tear it down and check the crank or judge by the seat of my pants? Any other ways to tell? I can tell from the pictures the intake has obviously been re done with a polish job (at minimum), new valve covers, has ceramic coated headers, AFPR and other misc. things. Also how can I tell what kind of 6 speed it has?

Well then, how do you know it's even a 350? Maybe it got swapped down to a 305 TPI. Take a head off and measure the bore and the stroke. I myself would find it hard to believe why they would keep stock heads and not at least port the plenum and intake with a 383. At least it looks like an aftermarket throttle body. If that's a bone stock intake, that would fall flat at 4500-5000 rpms

Drive it until the wheels fall off!

And then jack it up - without smashing the pinch welds! - and slap new wheels on it, and drive it until the motor gives up.

Then you can pull the motor and find out whether it was a 383 or whatever.

Nice score.

Re: Getting back into the 3rd gen drivers seat

I can read “specialists” on the plaque on top of the TB. So hoping it’s got a TPIS TB and matching runners with at least a ported plenum and base. At the price I’ve negotiated for it I didn’t want to ask too many questions. I could tell the guy I’m buying it from didn’t do any of the work (he didn’t even know if the headers were short, medium or long tube). Here are the RPO codes. It has G92 and Gu5, can anyone tell me what rear end it should have (assuming it hasn’t been swapped)?

Re: Getting back into the 3rd gen drivers seat

B2L should be the 350 and a G92 rear should have 3.23 gears, but then it should have come only with the Auto trans. The G92 in a 305 had the 3.42 gears with the manual trans. So it looks like your trans has been converted according to your RPO. Trans. MX0 is the auto trans RPO code. GU5 is the 3.23 gear. All in all your car was a 350 TPI with the auto trans, and a 3.23 gear when it was new. By the way L98 is the 350 also. Re: Getting back into the 3rd gen drivers seat

Just flew in and picked her up. She does indeed have a full TPIS intake system. She rides tight and pulls hard. Gonna have some drinks and drive her back to NM tomorrow morning.

Re: Getting back into the 3rd gen drivers seat

Here’s a pic of her in my driveway for the first time. The other pics made it look orange ish. Needs a trunk pull down motor (which I already ordered).

Yup it does look better in this picture, a deeper red. Looks nice. I hope it's everything you were expecting.

It’s more than I expected. I’m going to get her cleaned up, new pictures and see what she can do on the dyno.
