History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
The '92s are more rigid thanks to structural adhesives. Not a bad price. All the '91-'92 Z28 verts I've seen, including the one I used to own, only have the F41 suspension. The earlier ones have the full IROC FE2.
Sounds like a really good price to me. The only issue with the convertibles is finding replacement parts. Otherwise, I'd say grab that car if you're comfortable with the price.

Thank you Scott, I really appreciate your opinion and expertise!
ASC built a nice convertible. About the only thing not to like about them, is the lack of performance. A 91-92 Z28 convertible is pretty much an RS with a bulged hood, emblems, and TPI. The 2.73 gears and crunch bent 2.25" exhaust really stuffs a banana in the tail pipe.
That said, they're cruisers. For a convertible they're really well done, especially for a "conversion". They're comfortable to drive, I'd say even less creaky and rattly than a typical T-top car. A huge upgrade over the typical Fox body Mustang convertible with it's Le Baron roof assembly.

Just don't go racing any minivans for pink slips.
Great summary, just what I'm wanting to hear. Thanks a bunch!
I'm thinking I can always do some tasteful bolt-on mods for some more HP if I desire. I'm not going racing with it, it's going to be just a blvd cruiser.
BTW - I just sold a 93 Mustang LX 5.0 vert with 18K miles- Yes, I agree, they are not all that great of a convertible. Happy to hear these are better.

Laughing here!
Cruiser it is and a nice one at that! Drum rear, highway gears, auto - but it's got power leather seats and the top goes down. Just enjoy it the way it is - I don't think the price is out of line for the miles & condition.

Thanks for the input !!....Just wish it was a J65 car!

J65 was only available in '87 and '88 on the convertible. But take it from me, the pre '89 Delco rear discs are no better than drums, in fact rear drums are probably better.
dont know if you care about tpi and automatic but heres one ive seen for sale for awhile now and looks like a real nice convertible .. 5.0 with a stick and 18k miles for 15,900 .. bet he would take a couple grand less ..

I'm not specifically looking for a vert - I just stumbled onto that 92 Z vert....going to have a look at it on Friday. ...Also found a couple GTA's with 11K miles and 18K miles that are very nice as well.
The perfect car for me would be an original low mile (under 25K) IROC 5.7 solid roof car.

If that's what you're looking for, that's what you should hold out for. Like ray mentioned, in a couple months the market will be flooded with new available cars.

It's more of a preference then requirement....
Always keeping in mind what the best overall deal is as well.
Depends how I feel when I see the car....you know how it is...
I see you are in Stuart, I live in Northern PBC. Our area is great for Verts. Especially this time of year. When I looked for mine I did not consider a convertible, but is was in the best shape of any others at the time and the price was right. Even though this my car was not optioned the way I wanted, I can't tell you how much I enjoy this car now that I own it.
It was the best decision I made. From the looks of it, that is a very nice car you are looking at and from the OP it sounds like a fair price.

Thanks Vinney, Yes, I am in the Stuart, FL area and appreciate your input.
I've found that many verts lead a sheltered life and dont have many miles, a real plus when shopping for a car. Just too bad they dont have the 5.7 - enjoy!
I understand the attraction to the Irocz. I do. But I really only get excited about 89-92 cars with dual cats. It's nothing against the earlier cars, but in my opinion, the performance level really delivered on expectations when GM went to dual cats. It doesn't look like much on paper, but those cars are the ones that usually surprise people. They're not "fast" by any means, but for a stock thirdgen...
It's unfortunate that most of the convertibles didn't get the "good" engines. Most Z28 convertibles have the sluggish 305 TPI, salt flat gearing, the TBI sized exhaust... Most even are saddled with F41 suspension, which has softer springs, smaller sway bars, and narrower tires than the FE2/G92 cars.
If you don't mind the cruiser nature, there's nothing wrong with the convertibles. If you want more power, you might look for a "dealer" conversion. By the book, GM conversions (actually done by ASC) were limited to 305s, but a person or dealership could buy a t-top car, and have it converted by ASC. Some of those cars are 350TPI cars. Or if you can bring yourself to mod the car, you can always mod a convertible to match the hardtop performance.

Thanks Drew! I've had a pristine 89 Formula 350 with 9200 miles and your favorite N10 on the hook for some time now. Nice car. Overall, how common or uncommon is the N10 option? Just curious....if I go with a 305 TPI vert, I would do some bolt-ons for more HP, just nothing elaborate. Still prefer the 5.7 the most so still may go with a ttop (ugh) or solid roof (my fav) car.
Dual cats were pretty much required on the 350 cars from mid-89-up. The 305 TPI only had dual cats when the car had "G92" or the "performance package". It's a really good indicator on later cars if the car is going to be fun, or kind of a drag.
The other thing I look for is the gear ratio. Most of the "fast" thirdgens will have 3.23, 3.27, 3.42, 3.45 gears. Even some of the earlier HO carbed 305s with better gears are more fun to drive and feel less sluggish.
As far as mods, I'm not really saying that just going to dual cats or better gears makes the cars faster, but rather that the cars with those features generally have all the other features that make the cars more exciting.

I spoke with the seller of that car - I am just too doubtful of the mileage. It shows odometer roll back in the history report and I am too skeptical. Also other issues in the online history report.

Mileage could easily be some tech reading & recording the 10ths, the corrected titles would concern me however.
YUP! I agree....it was the "corrected title" that killed the deal for me.
I see this often on ebay cars advertised with ultra low miles. I stay away from those deals. Too risky....
