Agreed.. When I pop my hood at a show or cruise night there’s nothing IMO that looks as cool as a TPI.

Even my friends that are not into cars are impressed when they see the engine..

“Whoa, Tuned Port Injection what’s that?!”

It’s a fun car and it puts your butt in the seat and chirps second gear. I don’t care what my 1/4 mile time is anymore.

Exactly, feels good, sounds good, looks good. That's all I need from these cars.

^^^^^^^^^That was one of the first things I did when I bought the IROC a few years back. That with the "high flow" y pipe, magnaflow converter and exhaust really woke the car up. Anybody ever swap the air cleaners at the track to see if it actually made a measurable difference?

if i read that right he means the headers and exhaust made 241. Tune means computer chip changes to spark and air fuel. That is worth 10 more.

those numbers are in line with what i have done and seen. Actually abit better considering it was still stock tpi. These cars just dont have big cam, high flow heads or high rpm high flowing intakes in stock form so bolt ons only can get you so much.
considering most stock L98 will dyno between 200-220 whp on average depending on year and conditions making 20-40 whp more with bolt ons is decent

To get a little bit more free power, cut out the bottom of the air box before you install the filters. Even more than that cut 2 big holes in the plastic under the air box til you see the air scoops that come from behind the fog light for more air to the filters(semi Ram air effect). It works.

I think he's trying to keep from cutting up his mint airboxes.

Re: TPI go fast tips and tricks?

Some of you guys are getting a little bent out of shape over an injection system. It's just an injection system for crying out loud. Reminds me of when people get this passionate over a sports team, it's ridiculous. TPI had it's moment back in the day. It served a purpose, we street guys had a lot of fun with them against the Fox body's back in the day, but for me, now they are nostalgia. I've made friends with a lot of Fox body guys at the track over the years, and we would compare notes, something which was unheard of in the 90's because the rivalry was that intense, and we kept to our own. Now we just have a beer and laugh about it, it was fun back then. No reason to compare TPI with anything else, it did it's job. It's already proven and has earned its' respect. I have just about every issue about TPI that was released, this pic just scratches the surface, started collecting them in the 90's, and my cousin gave me his from the 80's. Don't ever think I am trashing TPI, cuz I grew up TPI and I still bleed TPI...

Exactly, I’m trying not to hack up a car that’s remained untouched for 30 years.

Back in the day I took a hacksaw to my 87 G92 airbox and ripped those screens right out of the MAF..

I felt like it helped the top end a little bit. Those air boxes do look pretty restrictive. Just getting the baffles out and adding the K&Ns is good for this car..

Come on now gentleman, you don't test torque by way of tire spin, all that means is you have horrible tires that aren't grabbing your two hundred horsepower. Testing torque is when the tires hook, and the engine doesn't bog down lol...

You can in theory test torque if the same squeaky street tires become squeakier, smokier and chirpier in a before and after application. That’s a controlled experiment!

The butt Dyno is all that matters me to me these days..

I'm just teasing you...

But this is why I posted my video, mine hooked, I braked it just under 60-mph to slow down and she was pulling hard because I was driving with two feet while holding the camera, and I didn't even hit the 330' yet. For those who race at the track, they pretty much know what the 1/4 mile equivalent should be, or close to. Not bad for a low compression 305 w/TPI...

Re: TPI go fast tips and tricks?

I’ve been playing with TPI since 1987. Blew the 305 and went 355 with Arizona Speed Marine setup with their Runners, cam and stock Extruded Hone Manifold. Ran that setup for awhile the got the TPIS Big Mouth Manifold in 1994. Extruded that Manifold then bought the Super Ram in 1997. Major ported the Super Ram in 2010 then traded it for the Miniram in 2012. Stroker the engine to 388cu in 2014. In 2000 bought Trickflow heads 195’s for $895 out of Chevy Magazine. Bought SLP Headers in 2001. Was running Edelbrock Headers in 1997. So I know what works and what doesn’t work.

Maybe so! But you can’t see it with the air snorkel on and the hood closed.

I know.. I figured this thread is not too serious at this point.. I mean I called my stock 305 convertible a torque monster..

I’ve seen the difference in times with slicks vs. street tires and I beat a lot of cars back in the day by not spinning my tires..

Tire spinning is fun though!

My auto 91 z28 305 was a turd. It should have the L98 cam too but certainly did not feel like the 224 whp L98 i drove a year prior lol.

Only time that car felt fast was with 9 psi boost. It was faster than a bolt on ls1 at that point

possibly. It was a 2.25” single but i dont think huge gains would be made going to 3”. I did not have stock muffler just a bullet. Still was slow lol. But the exhaust size was perfect for a rear mounted turbo

Will disagree there. To me the DZ-302 and LT-1 from 67-72 with those gorgeous finned valve covers are the best looking closely followed by the 1963-1965 mechanical Rochester fuel injected Vettes.

Mechanical fuel injection. Cool as it was it was a problematic system. Problematic enough GM didn't use FI on another V8 until early 80s.

Until the TBI crossfire injection correct? We all know this system was not that reliable either. The TPI was GM's first direct port injection correct?...Which ultimately is the base(begining) of the LS platform.

Re: TPI go fast tips and tricks?

I’d assume not since it would be worth way more money in a ZR1..

Its one of those things.. Third Gens are up in value.. ZR1s are collectibles with value.. combine the two though and you’re in the negative..

Most people don’t want to lose on both ends of the equation like that.. Probably have to take the drivetrain too huh?

Re: TPI go fast tips and tricks?

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, and other avenues as well!
As an original owner of L98 G92 w/SLP's, this thread made me chuckle.
With 214k on the go fast tips and tricks motor, I went out on Road America and had a blast with great brakes and suspension.

As soon as drove back to my garage from the track, the L98 came out really fast! I mean, it was really quick! What a hole shot! Must have been the torque I used ; OR, maybe it was the tri-y headers.
Originality has its place, but resto dollars were not justified compared to an LS2. I drive it. I have fun driving it. Gotta have HP in Speedville!

An LT5 in a Camaro? Never been done. Why that'd almost be as stupid as painting R15 Ronals dayglo yellow, upholstering an interior to match, and painting the outside like one of those stupid 90's graphics that looks like it's tearing away....

There's only one word to describe it... Rad.

I was going to compliment you on your Photoshop skills but this is a real car! Some questionable color choices to say the least but to each his own. I found a link to an old thread were the swap is being done, The funny part is half way through they start arguing about the ZR1 being faster than the C6 LS2...It never ends!

Re: TPI go fast tips and tricks?

It's true, the one I posted was a GM in-house project from back when that styling could be considered normal. It's since been auctioned in the great GM warehouse purge, and it occasionally pops up for sale or auction. Personally I think it'd be just fabulous with a paint job and some tribal-flame seat covers or new upholstery.

If I remember correctly, there's a clone out there somewhere too... As in someone copied the GM car, goofy colors and paint, and all.

Yeah, I remember seeing that. Did it have the R15s and LT5 though? Thought maybe the guy went LS.

Re: TPI go fast tips and tricks?

Nice little blurb from that article
“A guy by the name of Pocket on the thirdgen.org forum makes harnesses for LS swaps and part of that is the harness for the gauges,”
Jon is a friend of mine locally....good dude. Very smart. Cool to see him and TGO get a shout out. That Camaro is still ugly.

Re: TPI go fast tips and tricks?

Went to the big Seacoast Cars and Coffee and talked to a dude with a brand new 12 second Camaro.. 4 cylinder turbo..

Said someone had one doing high 10 second 1/4 mile.. out of a 4 cylinder..

I still like how my TPI looks, but damn..

Re: TPI go fast tips and tricks?

So with my reading coming to an end and my son and I scratching head and nether areas we are still wondering what to do with our 92 1LE TPI. It is my sons first car and we are not planning on him going to the track but after a yr of driving and no tickets or wrecks I would like to bump up the motor for his senior year. I am trying to find threads on the cutting of the airbox, I did something like that on my 05 Magnum RT and it worked nice with the C.A.I. Is there an actual thread with proven mods? At LXFORUMS.com they have a list of mods that were tested at the same time on the dyno and air strip. All the vendors tried out their products, the best one was a member named REVrand Hammer and he made a cold air out of pvc parts that outdid 400 dollar cold airs! This is a great site and I thank you all for helping out my son and I with our resto!
