Which fuel pump is correct?

1988 Camaro 358, carb running a Mallory Fuel pressure regulator. Car was originally a 305 tbi car so it has the in tank fuel pump.

I believe the fuel pump has died and now I'm looking to replace it. I checked on a walbro 255, 5CA400HP but according to walbro these are not direct fit to my camaro. The sales rep did recommend another walbro pump, 5CA401, which is supposed to be an OE replacement.

How hard is it to mount the 255 5CA400HP pump? or would the OE style pump be enough for now?

Re: Which fuel pump is correct?

OE pump would probably be just fine for a carb application. The 255 is probably a bit longer and you would need to trim the tube on the sending unit.

Thanks. I spoke with Walbro rep and she didn't know exactly what needed to be modified to make the 255 fit. But I may go OE since it should be enough.

Not sure what your regulator can do. Iirc working pressure for the carb is around 7 psi.
you don’t need that much psi for the pump

Re: Which fuel pump is correct?

The Walbro 255 fits no problem. It is used in the Edelbrock F body fuel pump kit. I just put one in my 91 Formula because I got it cheap with the car. Usually I go for the Deatschwerks DW200 (255lph) pumps. They have a kit for the C4 vette that is close enough. They are much quieter and we have never had one fail. Probably used 200 of them in the shop.
