91 Trans Am Convertible

Bought it from the second owner back in December of '03. I guess you could call it an xmas present to myself. Sweet. Started out as a 305 TPI Autotragic.

The owner just took a copy of my drivers license and let me take the car for the day. Wow, that's trust. Especially me being only 20.

First thing I did was start in with the suspension.

Sportline springs, Bilstein shocks, tubular adjustable panhard and lower control arms, and LCARB's.

Then I did a bunch of small stuff, a pillar gauges, 4thgen console, s2000 engine start button, ditched the stock leather seats for some more supports imitation race seats and a Momo millennium steering wheel.

Re: 91 Trans Am Convertible

I messed with the lights a bit. Tried some cheap projector h4 conversions then some real projectors down in the bumper and have since settled with free form h4 conversions and high output bulbs. I also added clear fender lights.

I've also played with the motor a bit. Stabbed a later LT1 camshaft in, popped on an HSR manifold and Heddmen long tube headers.

Then I did the best mod ever. T56.

And then I lost third gear, first gear and reverse. So it got a rebuild along with a Pro 5.0 shifter!

Re: 91 Trans Am Convertible

Here comes the brakes! First off it was the C5 ZO6 binders.

Along with big brakes, I had to run bigger wheels. So C5 wagon wheels here I come. 17x8.5 front and 18x9.5 rear.

Didn't take long before than wasn't enough for me. C6 ZO6 brakes! 6pot & 14" calipers.

Then I got a job at a local Chevy dealership and found some c6 wheels in the back of the parts room.

There are a lot of smaller mods I haven't accounted for, 4thgen door handles, !A/C, !Air Tubes, !EGR. Did the non-AC heater box, routed a lot of wires better, mounted a Wilwood adjustable prop valve, line lock, 4thgen master cylinder, '99 GMC Denali foglights, '96 Corvette GS-esque fender hash marks, Innovate Wideband O2 sensor, prominator and lots of messing with the tune, black "tuner" lug nuts, I've yanked the passanger side serpentine bracket off and mounted the alternator way down low on the passanger side, and lots of other stuff that I forget. Mostly smaller things that I try to aim for a "is that stock?" type of mod.

Opinions? Suggestions?

Re: 91 Trans Am Convertible

Ummm....What's the point of having a Starter Button, if the key switch is still there? Seems like it is more effort, to put the key in, turn it half way, then use the Starter Button, than just insert the key, and turn it to start it. Then there is the steering wheel lock issue...

Starter Buttons are neat, but with the key still having to be used....What's the point?

Well, if I yanked the key I wouldn't have a steering wheel lock and then I'd have to put some sort of switch to give power to the car and to run accessories. It's just different. Functions the same as in a *gasp* Honda S2000, stick key in, turn, hit button and enjoy! Plus most people are surprisingly to ignorant to figure out how to start the car, even though the button is bright red.

Never been to a drag track, so I have no idea. Realistically mid-low 14's? I'd love to save a flat 14 or high 13 but I don't think that's realistic until I put some higher gears in it. They were 2.73s, now they're 3.23s. I need to find some 3.73s or 4.11s. The center piece is stock. I took my original one from my 87 formula and just trimmed it to fit the retainer ring on the wheel. Just another subtle mod.

Which ones? The ones in the bumper or the "projector" conversion in the stock area?

Please dont quote posts with 9 pictures in them, it really sux for people with dial-up...luckily not me but I can remember those days.

iansane: I hate you...um I mean, nice car! Wish mine was half as cool. After much staring at those C6 wheels, I gotta know what size spacers or what did you need to do to fit them?

Re: 91 Trans Am Convertible

It's a fourthgen rear with a 1" spacer. Which is too far out for the rear in my opinion. I'd like to tuck them in a 1/2" or so but I'd need to swap back to a factory rear for that. The front has a 2" spacer and the added width from the brake upgrade. If there was more upward travel in the front I would like to see a little bit wider track but oh well.

New pictures!

Not much has changed other than master cylinder which you can't see, the headers and the cleaned up brake adapters.

Cue Ball shift ball with acc button.

The wideband 'O-meter'

My hula girl!

And a really bad shot of what's going on the car this summer.

very cool writeup and very sweet car.

I think you have the perfect rake with the C6 wheels.

how does it ride and handle with the Sportline springs, Bilstein shocks?

Re: 91 Trans Am Convertible

With the front springs trimmed a bit it's even stiffer. The ride is harsh. Holes and divits in the road kill me. I've vibrated more bolts loose than I care to count but it's all worth it when I throw it into the corners and the car doesn't do anything but stick to the road and go exactly where I point it. I can tell I'm getting towards the end of the usable-ness of these bilsteins. They've been on for ~five years. I'd like to try Konis now.

Yeah, it's the 18/19 combo. At a glance, to me, it looks good but the longer I look at it I want the same size front and rear. 19. They're 275s in front and 295s in rear. If they made wider tires for the 19s I would've run them but BFG doesn't.

Very cool. I agree with you, the best mods are the kind that make people ask you "is that stock?". I've taken it upon myself to do a few of those also.

I'm envious of your T56. I'll have one some day. Until then I'm updating the front brakes with LS1 stuff to compliment my LS1 rear end. Keep us updated on the turbo.

1" spacer on the rear with those wheels eh? I kinda like the way that looks. I was thinking of spacing my WS6 wheels another inch on the back. Either way I never knew the details on your car, and while I cant stand verts, its a beautiful car. Good work on the mods!

275/35-18 and 295/35-19. The rears are quite a bit larger than stock but they didn't make these tires in a shorter sidewall when I got them. Now I'm looking for another brand that'll have shorter and wider. Hopefully a 305 or 315

i dont know if you specified this, but are you sticking with the 305 for the turbo project?

the black wheels give the car a real mean look. Thats good. i wonder how it would look with chrome wheels...maybe more of a showcar look

I'm definitely sticking with the 305. Blowin' it to bits is my goal. But hopefully that'll be after I at least acquire it's replacement, an LS* motor. I really don't know what it'd look like with chrome wheels, never been a fan of them. And haven't seen another bird like this to compare?

Meh, I don't see how it's a "rice" wheel, but okay. Thanks for the suggestion! I have actually been considering a new steering wheel because this is a cheap knockoff but whatever I get will be similar to this, just less silver/chrome and maybe wrapped in actual leather/suede.

It's a Momo Millennium wheel. They start at around 300 bucks and I'd say the quality is a little better than the stuff you see at Auto Zone.

Well, other than you being absolutely crazy... Ha! Just ribbing ya. I don't mind the comment at all. Hell, I work at a Chev dealer and get more grief about it, most think I should just sell the whole car and get something newer. Never!

Boy, I love when you drive over dog crap. Although it happens when you've got 5 dogs.

Ha, no. I sold those off years ago. Whoever bought them got a SCREAMING deal. It was before I had ever shipped anything big like that and they sold on ebay for $150 + 50 shipping and it cost me almost $170 to ship them. So I basically sold the seats for $30. Shat. Live and learn I guess.

You're damn straight. haha. I've tracked that car more than mine and it's SO much nicer. But it better be for 55k!

The GFX are broken off on both front fenders. I need to get around to replacing them.
