Air filter on carb has very little room.

I have an 84 z28 and it has a 350 in it with a carb, the space between the carb and the hood is quite small, as of right now it has no air filter, since its been in the shop since I got it. I've been looking around a bit for low profile filters, are there any recommendations for one that takes up very little vertical space? I'm seeing some at 2 inches, not sure if thats about as low as they go or not.

If you can't find a factory air cleaner look for a 14" x3" drop base air cleaner

Re: Air filter on carb has very little room.

Problem with a "drop base" is, it ALSO drops the LID.

Doesn't matter too much what's under it, if all the air ends up having to skweeeeeeezzzze through a ¼" crack between the lid and the air horn.

Kinda comes with the territory with these cars. Firebirds are worse, their hood is flatter and lower.

Re: Air filter on carb has very little room.

Not sure exactly how much space there is, but the PO had a filter for a boat on there. Talk about sketchy. This is the carb, not sure what exact kind it is besides it being a edelbrock. Would something like this fit on this carb? https://www.summitracing.com/parts/s...d-ss/overview/

Re: Air filter on carb has very little room.

yes, that would probably work good. a drop base with the element type filter on the top will aid air flow.

Re: Air filter on carb has very little room.

Is there a good way to measure how much space there is once the hood is closed?

If you get a drop base you'll probably need the banjo bolt fuel inlet adapter for the carb so the air cleaner base doesn't kink the fuel hose going into the carb.

That's only the bolt. They sell the whole banjo fitting under the Edelbrock name.

Re: Air filter on carb has very little room.

If you switched the intake manifold to a Performer, you could get rid of that 3/4" adapter/spacer.

Edelbrock #8089 for the fitting. To bad you don't live by me I have a used Edelbrock intake for 87+ heads sitting on a shelf that would get you the room noemissons is talking about.

Re: Air filter on carb has very little room.

I'd like to slowly rebuild the entire car. Including the engine. So that will definitely be on the list
