1987 IROC-Z Convertible
This car is in my neighborhood. Original owner, 18K mile, '87 'vert. LG4/700R4/2.73.
The car has had various touch ups. One or both doors were painted after a trailering accident, (note placement of IROC-Z decals). Owner scraped driver's fender in the garage and then had fender, spoiler, bumper cover and hood repainted due to stone chips. Passenger quarter was repainted when scratched on new car delivery.
Carpet is trashed from the sun. Original floor mats are trashed. Lettering is worn off switches and shifter plate. Door panels need to be redone.
Currently has 4 lug nuts per wheel. Locks were destroyed by tire shop when owner couldn't find key and are missing. Needs a center cap and at least one wheel is scraped.
Oh, one more thing, something weird about the top. Very difficult to latch and then fold back down.
How much would you pay for this car?

- LG4
- Auto
- Leather (to me at least)
- paint work (for the miles at least)
- decals
+ Convertible
+ Miles
+ 1st Year of factory drop top since 1969
I wouldn't be in the market for it due to the color scheme and the motor/trans combo but maybe 12k?

Thats a beautiful car. I agree on the paint work deduct. Thats a pretty big deal on something that has that low of miles. I personally love the leather & while the leather shows its age on these cars today, from what I can see, this one looks pretty good. I am hoping the cracks in the driveway & pant leg in the door reflection are not ripples in the clear? I don't see any straight lines in there.... If the paint work was done right & everything else is original & looks like an 18K mile car should I think this could be a mid teen car, but that LG4 is a bigger deduct than any paint work for me.
LB9 & a 5 speed would have been just incredible in this car!

These two in your area have been for sale for a long time. Not the same car by any means, but for sure over priced a bit, for different reasons.

I think these two cars have been discussed already this year though?

Re: 1987 IROC-Z Convertible
Like I need another IROC-Z......
This car sort of fell in my lap. It's literally 5 minutes from me. I agree on a deduct on the paint work. I really have to see it in the sun. It was raining when I checked it out so we never pulled it out of the garage.
I also have to see how slow it is with an LG4 auto and 2.73. Haven't driven an LG4 in years. I guess you could say this was the "best" LG4 before it was replaced by the L03. The '87 LG4 is essentially a peanut cam LB9 with a carb and more restrictive exhaust. I believe it has a roller cam.
I'll try to stop by this weekend, pull it out in the sun and take it for a spin.

Those two are nice, but obviously over priced, since they've been for sale for ever.

Re: 1987 IROC-Z Convertible
I went from an 87 LG4 trans am to a std geared 5.0 TPI back in the early 90's What I remember is the TPI was a lot stronger off line as far as pedal response & rotating the rear tires. But cruising & wide open throttle was not too terribly different. TPI with the performance axle was night & day though as I recall.
Sad to say, but I couldn't care less about the performance of these cars today. I enjoy the heck out of them for what they are with a nostalgic eye. But, I think the engine options sure effect the value.
By the way, not that many 87's had leather, & of those most of them have pretty deep cracks/lines in the seating surface. My 87 has 65-70K? miles on it & the drivers seat looks a bit worn. Not terrible, but worse than the passengers seat for sure. Very stiff thick leather in those cars. So rare to see them in nice shape!

Re: 1987 IROC-Z Convertible
Those are the typical cars that make them all expensive. Sellers won't get realistic on the price, & then the next guy to parts ways with his car does a quick search & sees what they are "selling" for. Up comes another overpriced car & the market of asking prices keeps going up. I know this is for not what really drives the prices, but its plays a pretty big factor. The cars that are priced right sell quick & nobody can search the history of the sale on CL
Seems to me ebay used to be where the expensive cars were & CL was where you find the local deals. That's changed a lot over the past few years imo. Kinda flip flopped. The deals are still out there, there is just far more over priced stuff.
This car has been for sale since last summer. the price has come down some, but still has not sold. Pretty nice car as far as I can tell. Still a little over priced though https://milwaukee.craigslist.org/cto/6111521779.html
Rant over.........

I think your right, I was being pretty conservative saying last summer. It very well could be a year. I think he started at 16K?
you & I live close enough to each other where we are obviously watching the same cars

Re: 1987 IROC-Z Convertible
i would go 10k max on a car like that .. obviously if it was a all original mint 18k mile 87 tpi conv. that would be a whole different story , but its not ..

Re: 1987 IROC-Z Convertible
I think I was very conservative at $10k. If the Mikes can be documented I don't think his asking price of $16k is that insane. It is a tough car to find & people who are hunting for an 87 IROC this is a tough car to find. You might look back in 5 years and regret not grabbing it IF you want to add an 87 IROC convertible. I don't think they are going to get cheaper. Go see how many 87's you van find. Obviously TPI in 87 was ONLY available in the 5 spd.

I agree with Ray, the engine trans combo really hurts the value especially if you are looking for a "driver". I think the 10K is a pretty good value for this.

Most 5 speed cars were G92 in '87. I have however, seen 1 or 2 which weren't G92, according to their SPIDs.

Re: 1987 IROC-Z Convertible
Not really sure. I thought I knew, but I've been getting opinions all over the place on it.
I'd feel better if it were all original paint, though. But it presents well. The undercarriage looks like it's never been wet.
Just came back from driving it. Actually, the LG4 drives a lot better than I was expecting. Better than your typical 145 horsepower earlier LG4s. Feels a lot like a peanut cam LB9, to be honest.
I gave him an offer, he'll get back to me after talking to his wife, (it's her car). I'll keep you guys posted.

Glad you were able to work a deal on this convertible chazman, congrats on the purchase. Post up some more pics/details when you have the opportunity. Looks like you'll have to change up your signature line for the addition!

Let's just say in the ballpark of what's been discussed here.
Will do, when I pick it up.
170 in the IROC. Not sure where that extra 5 horses comes from.

First thing you need to do is fix that door decal. It's driving me crazy!

Re: 1987 IROC-Z Convertible
The door decal thing is a funny comment. No doubt they are way off on Chazman's new addition, but sometimes they can be off only a little bit & its noticeable to the trained eye. I have installed several of the GM decals back in the early 90's & I think they had alignment marks on them. I know one was to the front edge of the door (85-87) & the other might have been to the top of the stripes & people were mistakenly putting them at the top of the rocker/door ground effects?
I still have a full GM set of decals for my 87 in the basement. I should look again. I would guess all the repop decals come with no location info?

"Pin the decal on the door panel" good thing it was just a blindfold & not too many spins. never know where that decal could land........
Ok, its not quite that bad, but its pretty darn crooked.

Yeah on nos GM ones they have alignment guides on the Iroc door decals that help you install them really accurately. It's important to remember that 85-87's had them placed at the front of the door and 88-90's had the placed at the rear of the door.

If it helps, I can roll out my GM decals to measure the marks on them exactly. Given how fussy all of us are getting, maybe use those measurements & few other original cars to take the average?
No doubt GM had some sort of fixture or template to install them on the line. I have never seen a crooked one back in the day.
My 87 still has the original decals & paint, but its a few cars deep & 6 miles away from my home.

That's just so the guy in the car next to it at the stop light can see what kinda car it is.
One of my favorite color combo's though....

Here's my stash for the 87. This box has every emblem & decal. Interesting how some of the stripes are rolled up on a tube & some are in smaller boxes. Bought them about 18 years ago.
