Transmission fluid for 700R4

Ready to change filter and fluid in my 88 with the original 700R4 transmission. All I see these days is Dexron V1 type fluids which are a synthetic lubes that seem to be designed for today's transmissions. I don't like to mix synthetic and dino oils and I somewhat concerned about using synthetic in older cars - in anything. I do see recommendations to do the full flush to use the new fluid. What do you guys use for this transmission for the usual change?

Re: Transmission fluid for 700R4

I just ordered the ATP trans filter off rockauto and I plan to use Dexron III. Valvoline Dex/Merc to be exact, we’ll see how it goes!

Re: Transmission fluid for 700R4

Checked up on that Dex/Merc fluid and it looks like the right stuff. Had the car parked for 5 years and the last time I changed it the straight Dexron III was easy to get. Thanks for the info!

No problem! Good luck with the fluid change. I’ll be dropping my trans pan for the first time. 31k miles on my 87 GTA

Re: Transmission fluid for 700R4

I got the car about 20 years ago, changed the filter/fluid pretty quick, put a drain plug on the pan. Real handy addition for this. Got two gallons of Valvoline DexMerc fluid at Walmart for under $20 a gallon, close to $40 at local parts stores. Just rolled over 200k miles, still running strong (knock on wood) and looking decent. Actually gets a lot of attention these days.

Re: Transmission fluid for 700R4

Got under it today and changed that filter and fluid. Takes some doing to get that car up high enough to get under it. 700R4 transmission has 200k miles, about 60K since last change. Looked better than I expected. The sure don't build them like that these days.

Not bad at all. I’m waiting on a new gasket and filter. The one I ordered from rockauto had a slight tear in the gasket so they’re sending a new one. Which filter and gasket did you go with? Did your magnet in the pan have alot of metal shavings on it?

Re: Transmission fluid for 700R4

I used the Valvoline Max-life dex/merc with AC Delco gasket and filter, it has been in there a few years now and no complaints, the GTA has 96k on it now. I also added an aluminum pan with magnetic drain plug, really makes fluid changes a breeze.

Re: Transmission fluid for 700R4

I went to Advance Auto, got their house brand filter. It came with a rubber gasket, filter has a foam element instead of just a screen, fit and works fine. About $20 for the kit. No place local had a Delco or Fram in stock, and those are double the price, probably the same filter anyway. Magnet had a layer of really fine black sludge like stuff, no real metal and no fiber pieces in the pan. Had to take off the crossmember to get to the rear pan bolts. GM seems to always make it difficult somehow.
