Sorry, off topic...

I'm sorry but I'm planning on going to UTI in Houston next fall. Does anyone have any info on it, or heard any info? Anyone go there? I'm sorry this is off topic, but I don't know where else to go to get info, their website isn't much help. Thanks,

I know a guy who goes there, and sorry for any that do go there but sadly I knew more about the cars then he did!!! In fact when changing out an enigine in his little riceburner it took him and another UTI student 2 hours to figure out how to put the engine on the stand! Also when changing out the brakes he didnt put the equalizer thingy-do on the back that senses when you need to change them, and he couldnt figure out how to put the lugnut cover back on the wheel! Now it may be that I just came across a person that doesnt listen in class but to not know these simple things is crazynuts in my book. I know that he complained that the teachers mainly deal with domestics, of course hes an import guy and that they had a dyno there but that the teachers would only let domestics use it. So since you are in the TGO forums you might have a heads up, I just know that I would never ever ever let a guy like him work on my car, or that other student that was helping him. Sorry again if you go there, he might just be a dumb one.... quite frankly it wouldnt suprise me.

What can I say? Guess those guys are duds, not that I consider myself to be that great... No, this place is not as good as they make it out to be, its not the 'end all be all of automotive training', but like so many other things in life, you get out what you put into it. Just like high school, some people really apply themselves some just don't seem to care. Though I don't know why the latter would spend all that money or end up in loan debt hell if they aren't serious. Also, some people come here with a prior working knowledge of a lot of things, while some may have never even looked under the hood.

So far, it does seem to be mostly domestics that we work on and learn about, but I'm only four classes into this. We're taught a very general overview of a lot of things aside from the manufacturer specific programs(Ford, BMW, Porsche, etc).

The dyno thing is a little strange though, they put imports on them all the time. Last phase they had some turbo'ed and N2O'ed Civic on it that put out like 350+ hp. I gonna try to strap the RS to it next week.

Sorry, didn't mean to preach there. Its not like I love this place or anything.

Yeah well, having your car broken into tends to make you dislike a place. I'm from a small town south of Austin so I never had to worry about that, then I moved here...

I've come to respect the import guys a lot since being here. Well, some of them. There's a guy at school that has H22 powered CRX that runs low 13's all engine and 12's on the bottle.

Seriously, I went to a 2-yr automotive program thru Brookhaven (a local community college). It was dealership sponsored, so I would go to school for 10 weeks, then work at the dealer for 10 weeks. This went on for 22 months (72 credit hours total). The total price was around $4500, including tuition, books, and a crap load of Snap-On tools. I heard that UTI and other tech schools charge $15,000-$20,000

Having worked with graduates of both, and "toured" both facilities, I can say without doubt that San Jacinto College has a MUCH better program (the GM ASEP, fairly competitive to get into). When I was touring UTI, one of the INSTRUCTORS couldn't manage to stab a distributor into a freakin small block, there were not special circumstances, he was just ignorant. Having done my time with a wrench, it ain't something I even much enjoy doing on my own personal vehicles anymore. One thing is for damn sure, as long as people drive, their cars will break. As long as people break their cars, someone will have to fix them. Its an invaluable skill to have, provided you're able to kick *** and take names when it comes to working on anything with wheels and an engine, you can make very good money. If you don't fit that profile, do not expect a single dime over $15K a year or so after tax, feel blessed if you manage better than that. I have, but I was guided by a man I personally feel is the best damn tech in Houston.

Best wishes, and good luck.

Anthony

p.s that ain't meant to discourage a single one of you, just a bit of perspective from someone I'd bet is around your age group, that has done it, and is glad to be finished with it.

p.p.s F.M 969 just west of bastrop, one of the most damn fun roads to haul royal *** down in the whole state I'm sure you knew that already.

indeed, GM ASEP > anything UTI has to offer, for a mere fraction of the cost, and a zillion times the benefit. I've never worked with a UTI graduate that was in a position above sweeping the floor either.

Well damn. I just got that scholorship to UTI. Ya'll say San Jacinto's better. Where exactly is that? How much does it cost compared to UTI? I'm just a little confused on what to do. Thanks so much for all the replies.

San Jac is on the East side of Houston iirc. Look for somewhere with an ASEP program (GM, and Ford both have them, BMW, and Jag also have similar programs, San Jac offers them all.) You will learn about cars at UTI, but imo its not anywhere near the level one should expect with that kind of money.

Welp, I'm fairly certain that I'm goin' to San Jac. I talked to the head guy a few days ago, and all I need is to get a dealership to sponser me, and send them in my transcript. Was any third genner there Monday? I saw a white 91-92ish lookin' Bird.

I would recommend SAM (School of Automotive Machinists). They have a program where you build and race a car. Very good school from what I've seen and heard. They even have a school team car (Ls-1 Camaro) that runs 9's !!!!

I on the other hand am self taught. I've performed every modication to my car (besides the paint). Building a motor is really easier than it sounds!

But anyways, I would look at SAM's for your schooling.

Good luck!
