305 or 350?
Just like the title keep my 305 and work it or swap a 350 in it.
My two issues are
a.Interchangeability between 350 and 305 parts
b.injection
305
i want a 305 simply for the fact of my last well know post about 4th gens. What would be cooler than have a small bore 305 wax the hairs off of an ls1's butt? I know this is possible because........i dont know i want to make it possible! also i have the block for it and i know it bolts to my car. only issue is heads?
350
easier to grab parts for. need we say more.
injection
tpi or carb
tpi
fuel economy. efficiency. expensive
carb
poor fuel economy. easy. less expensive.
i guess what im asking for is opinions and knowledgable people about 305 builds.

In case i didn't make myself clear,
350!!! 350!!! 350!!!
Max easier HP is non computer carb.
Unless/until U learn how write chips or have a chip tuner buddy in yur pocket, injection will always be harder to deal with overall.

thats what im thinking too craig.
its alot easier finding parts for 350's than small bore 305s. now what i could do is get a 350 block and put a 283 crank in it and turn it into a 305. been thinking about that too. carb is definitly looking like the better choice right now.

Depends on what you want to do with your car. If you are talking about racing, then you definitely want to start with a 350. If you are more into cruising and freeway driving, a 305 is a perfectly good motor.
I had a 91 Z28 with a stock 305, 700r4 auto and 2.73 gears. It was great for long drives, I drove it down to Houston from Detroit and got excellent gas mileage.
I have a 91 Formula 350 now, with a TH350 and 3.83 gears. Great at the strip, 1.8x 60' times and running in the low 13s. But it sucks on the freeway, about 3300 rpm at 70 mph, and I figure about 6 mpg!!
As far as interchangeability of parts between the to motors, in my experience just about everything is interchangeable. Exeptions of course would be pistons and injectors. I don' know about the bottom end, rods, crank etc?

350..
I wouldn't waste my time with a 305. I've owned both and I must say, there is no choice as to which one I would choose to own next.
A 305 may have good gas mileage, but thats not just because of the size of the motor. 350's can get just as good mileage with a proper tune and proper parts. My bone stock 305 w/ an LT1 cam runs very smooth, but I must say, the power is just not there. Its really not going to be there unless you throw quite a bit of money into it. Once you get the speed bug, there is no stopping and you will be kicking yourself for sticking with a 305.
350 engines are just as ubiquitous as a 305 and the parts are even more common. You just cant beat the bang for the buck price of 350 engines. Do yourself a favor and just forget about the anemic 305.

you can always say your real 350 in your car is a 305
cause it looks exactly the same....and im pretty sure you can always say your real 383 actually in your car is a 305...at least I think they all look the same.
But coming from a 305 guy myself ...i'd also get a 350/383 maybe a crate motor would be the best way to go for some of us ...especially since you got a TBI you can easily make it into a Carb .
I built a motor one time...and if you got experience, time, and money then go for it ....but you can find some real good deals on already quality built motors especially carbed. I personally am going to save up for a LS1 or LT1 swap once i can get enough time on my hands
