Help me with my timing

First of all can someone explain to me how timing works? I know the basic principle, but i dont know all of the details. How does the computer advance the timing, how does advancing work? Things like that.
But my main question is what should i set my timing at? for those of you who dont know what i have lo3, 700r4, 2.73 pegleg. Full exhaust, and an air cleaner. Im not sure what its set at right now, factory is 0 degrees.

I forgot to tell the symptoms, sorry. About 4 months ago i replaced my intake gaskets, so i had to reset the timing. My Girlfriends brother set it. it hasnt run well since. it is real sluggish until about 2500 then it kicks in. im sure its my timing because that is the only thing we have messed with since its been acting up, or i could be wrong.

U REALLY NEED TO DO A SEARCH ON THE TECH BOARD FOR ALL THE INFO U WANT! "timing" or "setting timing"

But, set it at 6* BTDC--disconnect the wire up by Ac blower motor--brown wire I think it is. U may have to do the paperclip thing in the diagnostic plug under the dash to get it to act right.

The timing is advanced via the computer based on a table of values IE: how much timing at how many rpm under certain conditions, temperatures, fuel, throttle position ETC,ETC,ETC........ The computer advanced the timing based on all this info and feeds the signal to the ignition module in the dist and fires it and is carried throught the rotot,to cap etc as any normal ignition.

When the computer receives knock signals through the knock senser, it retards the timing to remove some of the knock.--the more /higher knock count the more it removes timing.

Really dude, if U go to the tech boards --either TBI or general engine tech and do a search--it has been covered about a gazillion times and U can get way more info than U want or need!

If U have had this problem since U set the timing last time, are U sure U hooked back u the timing wire that U have to disconnect?

If U set the timing without disconnecting that wire, that is why your car is running like crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok so the brown wire correct? kinda behind the ac condensor? we pulled that if so, any where from 3-6* is what people were setting it at to get optimal performance. Thanks craig, you always go outta your way! by the way i got all of my suspension stuff on and its great! im going to wash it and take pictures of it and post it this weekend.

May also want to scan these--it looks like their may be some articles that pertain to your car!

Well the links do not seem to be working out right--go to the home page and click on FAQ's and tech articles under it and scan thru to see what pertains to your car.
