I was looking at these tires on Jegs. They say they are DOT approved drag radials. They have so little grooves in them they look like they would be dangerous in even a little rain.

 

Those tires don't really look like they were meant for everyday driving, although, they look awesome for racing, (track) applications....slick.....

As far as the tires go...I sure wouldn't use them on the street. Eagle F1's fro street racing.

Anyway, I already ordered the tires. I only drive my car about 100 miles per month so I think Im ok. IM going to kick *** at the strip

They are Nitto Drag Radials 275/60/R15. I have them on a 15x8" rim. Note, they are 15" rims. I was going to hold onto them until I determine that the new ones are working out ok, then sell them on the board here. PRobably a high HP street car might buy them. They don't have many miles on them.

I guess a thirdgen guy could get a cheap set of 15" rims and run em

In some NHRA and IHRA classes they made it a rule many years ago, that for some particular classes that they were trying to keep under control, that U must run a street legal tire. It was to keep cost down down and to keep racers from showing up with big butt full wrinkle wall slicks.

In order to get an advantage, the racers went to the tire companies, and said produce a DOT (Department of Transportation) legal tire that hooks up better than regular tires.

Over the years the tire companies have pushed the envelope more and more, for better tires, but to pass DOT specs the tires MUST have tread on them! That is why they have minimal grooving.Just because they are DOT approved does not mean they are recommended to use on the street.

It means it is a tire built to pass the MINIMUM specs to get a tire DOT approved. It is basically a raidal constructed sidewall with a couple grooves, just so they pass DOT approval!

 

OK, Im going to put them on and see how they go. Like I said, the farthest I would ever drive the car is to a meet or the track. A guy in the other thread said that since they are radials, they would have the bands in the sidewall that won't make them squirrely on the freeway like during a lane change, like an ET street or other non radial would.

 

ET streets are scary on the freeway.

 

Yeah but these aren't ET Streets. They are a Radial tire that has the bands for sidewall support,unlike ET streets. They are just like other drag radial except they have even less tread. According to a guy on the other thread I put about this in the racing section, the onlly difference I should see between these and a regular radial is wet traction.

 

Well I got em on today. They look great and feel great. I havent really been able to jump on them, just driving arouond my neighborhood with little kids riding bikes, etc.

That's what I'm saying....your tires will be fine on the freeway, as long as it's not raining.

it was around 1am in the fall (you know when it feels wet outside but its not) anyway i was cutting turns up 35e at around 120 mph in dallas by the zoo and his car just washed behind me and almost hit a wall, he said he felt like he was driving on a bar of soap
i have the bfg comp ta's kdw 285/40/zr17 on my 98 and im putting around 380 hp to the wheels and she does fine in the rain and when its a little damp out and never breaks loose like those wonderful nitos

just dont drive in the rain, at night in neighbor hoods with sprinklers, or in the fog, or when its a little damp out, or behind cars that might be leaking water because their over heating, dont race on roads you have walked to make sure theres no bad spots and um yeah just dont drive your car on roads you dont know and youll be fine

 

Im only leaving the house in the car when there is zero % chance of rain. We almost never have fog here, only a little in the mornings sometimes. Freaking sprinklers are a problem though. They have them in the landscaped center areas of the road sometimes and they go all over the place. I remember going through some sprinklers one time with my car after I just washed and waxed it. As far as racing, the only racing I do is on the drag strip, so no water there.
