What are the odds....
I am planning in doing an engine swap this Saturday. I have a 91 RS with a 305 tbi, and am going to a 350. I will use the current tranny in the car now, so no worries there. I live in Deer park, SE Houston. I cannot pay anyone to hepl me as I am a full time med student living on loans meaning im broke and in debt lol!!! I will have cold beer and hot food continuously running if anyone would like to lend a helping hand, not do the work but correct me if im about to do something stupid. I know it should be a pretty easy swap but id rather have some knowledgable people around instead of taking a chance you know. I would surely appreciate any and all assistance even if it only for a few moments. If anyone has the time just let me know through here or my email. oh, also please leave your number that way we can get all of the details worked out as far as addresses and times and what not.
Thanks, Eddie

I was thinking about swapping my clutch out on Saturday, but I may come by instead to lend a hand. My experience level is on the low side but I may be able to help losen a bolt or two.
Do you have everything you need? Are you passing beer out before or after the job?

In summary, I need help, lots of help fellas. Saturday if yall are still planning on coming over, like i said ill be working on it until 1pm, the address is 811 Harvard In deer park 77536

Well, how did it go today? Are you still getting started early on Saturday?
I'm going to try and make it as early as I can.
ESC, if you make it do you want to try and find the bone yard out that way?
Has anyone been lately? Have they had much to pick from?

I won't be free until about 1pm on Saturday...so estone06 will be done for the day.
I'll probably just head out to my shop and start sizing up what I will need to do to install the new computers in my car. Then go to Otto's tomorrow night.

I got my new clutch today. I may see if you or Barry are available later to help out. (I got the zoom dual friction)
If you don't mind, would you check out my 'Transmission Jack' problem in the transmission forum and see if you have any suggestions? I've not got any bites on my question.

plndtx, yes I am planning on getting started as soon as I can. I plan on waking up at about 630am. With the help of a few friends and including Nick, we have done everything except pull the 2 engine mounts, the driveshaft and yank that tired dog out of there. Ill be up and out there early, so feel free to come over.

My ride is still in the break in period, and that's a LONG way out there, but I can answer any questions if you come up with them. It's a Carbed V8, you'll never encounter an engine that jumps out of the car any easier, I promise

Eddie,
Doesn't the trans have to be controled by the computer? What are your plans in that department?
Guys,
We got the engine out and still have all of our fingers and toes! Thats a sign of success isn't it?

yeah i am sure it will be a huge difference. the 350 has hooker headers, high rise extreme intake a 750 holley, and a 383 stroker kit. I am sure itll be really hard to keep my foot out of it for a while.
the majority of the questions i have are pertaining to the swapping of the accesory belt drives and pullyes as well as the fuel regulator that ill be needing to set up and of course the run of the mill details. it is hard for me to come up with one specific question without me taking pics fo it or for you to be here to see what i am dealing with you know.
id like to thank chris and nick for their help on the project. chris, how is the clutch coming along?
the tranny as far as i know will not have to be controlled by the ecm if i get a torque lock on it. ill of course have to research that one, unless someone can offer a lamens term explanation.

I stopped at sears and got a jack that will accept my tranny adapter. I also picked up a creaper.
If Barry reads this, can I borrow/buy your tranny plug so when I pull the drive shaft I don't get the flood of fluid that Eddie received today. Or if Summit has them and they are cheap could your point them out to me. I may order and poly trans mount and a torque arm bushing from Summit. I can get the trans mount at the local parts store but the TA bushing is a little harder to find.
I may dig up the 'local speed shop' post a made a few months ago and see if I can find it local.
If no one wants to 'see' this, I may start this week during the day while the kiddies are in school.

okay well alex and I have dropped the 383 into the camaro today. I need to do a few small item things before this project can go any further. i will have a list fo things left over or not needed anymore when all fo this is over in a small attempt to get a few dollars back from some of the costs of doing this.
i appreciate all fo the help and knowledge this weekend fellas. Im sure ill be sending out another call over the next few weeks as well. I have a few major exams ot study for and then i should be able to take care of the details with this swap.

Just get an old driveshaft outta any car with a matching tranny, cut the pull the u-joint, keep the tranny yoke, and you're all set, on a tranny plug. Unless you can actually find a yoke that doesn't have a driveshaft on it.

As an update..........
The 350 is bored .40 over and the stroker kit was priced at upwards of 1800.00. The heads are fresh and machined down around 10k miles. The guy that built the motor cannot remember the cam placed in it but he said it does have a .530 lift so it has a really nice lope to it. He built two of the motors and same set up on both, they both dynoed between 450-465 flywheel. my camaro drivetrain will not be able to handle that much at all. So slowly over time ill get that corrected as well. The compression is 11:1. SO i hae to run super unleaded of course. What about oil guys....im thinking 15/50 synthetic.
---not too bad of an upgrade from a 305 tbi huh.

the 350 is in and just needs to be plumbed up, i am getting a 3 way regulator from another member on hte boards (new). Need to set timing put headers on, plumb carb and then fire it up. It will take me a while to get it plumbed up and to get the timing right, but ill get there in a month or so. how did the main seal go?

It went well. I finally got the hang of it on the second one. I just got everything put back together this week.
I'll watch the board to see if there is anything else I can help you with.

estone06, is this a new motor? is it is then don't run synthetic to start with, get it broken in on dyno oil, say around 5000 miles should be good & then go with synthetic.
for break in 10w30 castro i feel would be good.
i know synthetic isn't effected by cold temps like regular oil is, but i feel 15/50would be too thick, maybe use 5w30, you want to get oil to everything as fast as possible at every startup.

yeah, this engine has around 10k miles on it at the moment. I bought 10/30 and then i actually stopped and thought about it for a minute, and im thinking just b/c the compression is quite high, i think thick is better. with 5w30 wouldnt that oil be burned fairly quickly at the higher temps. i see your point though. im just trying to hit it from every angle you know.
