The saga continues....

First off I want to say thanks to Mike(1bad91z) for give me the clutch hydraulics I needed to get my car driveable. I installed them tonight and just when I thought that everything was going my way I ran into another problem. I started the car and let it warm, and then I pushed the clutch pedal in and it started making a terrible whining sound. So I took my foot off and then pressed it again and of course the sound was there again. So I cut the car off and Pushed the clutch pedal down to see what was up and it felt like something was binding and not letting it push down all the way. I got under the car and played with the clutch for a little and the pedal felt better. So I went to start the car and when I turned the starter it made a sound like the starter was grinding with the flywheel. I am going to post in the transmission board to see if anyone can help me out, but it sounds like I need to pull my trans and get a new fork and re-install the TO bearing. I am not discouraged though, I will get-r-done. Thanks again Mike.

Re: The saga continues....

You're welcome!

When you buy the new fork, DO NOT cheap out. What I mean by that is, buy a new TO bearing AND most importantly, a new pivot stud. You may have to get the pivot stud from the dealer if O'reilleys doesn't carry it.

The pivot stud get's worn over time which throws the whole thing out of allignment causing noise, vibration, etc...

You'd be surprised what a difference it will make if you replace all three components. Also, I don't know how good that slave cylinder is. It may be one of the sources of your problem. But, it may still be in working order.

Good luck!

Re: The saga continues....

Thanks, I was planning on the new TO bearing and Fork, but didnt think about the pivot ball. I thought about the slave/master combo so I replaced both with the new ones I already had. I am still a little curious as to why the pedal felt like it was binding.

Yeah, I am going to play with it some this weekend. The pushrod from my slave cylinder looks like its sitting kind of crooked in the clutch fork as well. We shall see, I am getting close though.

Manuals.............. TOO MANY HEADACHES!!!!!!! Come over to the other side boys. A well-built 350 will handle anything you can throw at it.

Re: The saga continues....

Yeah, standard trasmissions are much more complicated than autos, but more fun to drive as well. I cant stand how boring it is driving a powerful car with an automatic transmission. Long time no post Barry, whats up? You going to make it the winter meet?

whats so complicated about a man trans, autos are the possible complicated ones, with all the different circuits, accumilators, valves, etc,.

Re: The saga continues....

Yeah, but everything is inside. All you have to do is slip on the torque converter, bolt it up, and go (plus shifter cable and detent cable for some). You only start to run into problems when something fails. With the manual trans you have to install the pilot bushing, the flyweel, the clutch, the pressure plate, then you have to install the throwout bearing to the clutch fork, then the bell housing. AND FINALLY you get to bolt it up. Pain in the ****, but the driving is great.

Re: The saga continues....

Man, you sissapoint me, i live my T5, it is 75 LBS!!! My clutch set and plit bearing go together so easily. I have no issues with it flying together. My only complaint is for both atup and stick, my damn Y pipe, i have to cut it off to drop the trans. The heavy *** auto is a pain if you dont do it allot by yourself, might fall off the jack, might not. Then there are the trans jacks, i dont have one so it sucks to have a auto land on you if it fals off, i just pich my T5 up like it is nothing.

Re: The saga continues....

Yeah, I forgot about that. I am just used to autos, easy money for me. I also like the fact that you dont have to worry about the trans cooler and the kickdown cable. I will take a standard any day. Auto is like kissing your sister.

Re: The saga continues....

OK, so I pulled the dust cover off of the bell housing to inspect the fork, and some how the Throwout bearing has come off of the fork completely and is just sitting on the input shaft of the trans. I guess I installed it wrong. So I am going to pull the trans saturday and install a new fork, TO bearing assembly and hopefully I will have her back up soon.

Re: The saga continues....

Got the trans out today and all I can say is WTF? The "fork" part of the clutch fork was bent on both sides and the throwout bearing looks like its been through a grinder. What the hell did I do? It looks like the throwout bearing was ripped right off of the fork with some tremendous force. I am ordering all the new parts tonight and I will install them next weekend. In the mean time I need to figure out what I did wrong so I dont do it again.
