To fix, or to have new rebuilt, that is the question....

Hi all, I have found out that my v8 305 in my 84 t/a is blowing blue smoke a few secs and quite a bit on every fireup but then it stops within 7-10 seconds and I was told by several ppl to keep an eye on the oil and just go with it. I was also told that to fix it would require about $300 some odd bucks. Now the question is....is it better to fix it with the 300 some odd bucks.....or is it better to add about 600 more to get a rebuilt 305 v8 or is it better to get my own engine rebuilt/overhauled?

Which is better and less costly?

Also what are your feelings on rebuilt engines say from advanced auto parts or autozone, etc?

i did some looking around and autozone told me they have a rebuilt 305 v8 with a 18 month warranty for $877.39 but I have to give them my engine in partial trade/payment. They said the engine comes with everything but valve covers, oil pan, carb, etc. Is this a good deal?

also can I keep on running the car the way it is or is it close to blowing up already and I need to park it? Right now my 84 t/a is my daily driver.

and a friend of mine said that he suggests i skip autozone and find a local builder in the NC area so all NC members please help too

All feedback is most welcome
thanks everyone

sounds to me like valve stem seals which would require the heads to be pulled to change i belive....this can be done yourself for much much much less if your confident mine is doing the same thing and smoking more and more but im still fine on oil between changes it only takes a couple of drops getting passed the valves to create smoke though.

Thanks for the info but I have no idea on how to do any of that, nor do I know the cost of what it would take to fix it. And if I did get that fixed, how soon would it be that it would start doing it again?

Also with the mileage on the car right now = 83928 five digit odometer reading - how soon do I need to replace the engine in other words how soon will this thing blow up and I have no choice but to replace the engine?

Keep the info coming please. Everything I can get helps me make a better decision than what I would do if I was on my own

Thanks everyone

lol....if that reading is accurate then u should be fine on mileage assuming its been taken care of. there are plenty on here pushing 200,000 or above. mine has 115,000 but its engine has been replaced...the engine in it now has about 85000, but its all about how it was treated, just cause u have leaky valve stem seals dosent mean its a bad engine though.

well depending on what vlave seals u get they should do fine for 100000 miles as far as how hard it is i cant really give an accurate account cause i have not yet swapped heads. the reason why it costs so much to have it done is the length of time it takes to get to the problem...u have to take the tbi off, distributor off, intake off then the heads....(of course more steps to it than that) the parts to replace total around 40 bucks and thats including new head gaskets and all...if u got them off and took them to a head shop or anyone it would cost 20 bucks probably to have the seals replaced.
