Gas Leak

Gas Tank Issues, Hi everyone. I have an 88 GTA and I just had my fuel tank, float, fuel pump, etc. replaced. I still have an issue with my gas cap and gas leaks. If you could help me understand my problem, it would be great. The problem that I have was going on before the work was completed so I am guessing it is a separate thing that needs to be delt with. My gas cap does not screw on the way I believe it should. After only maybe one turn it stops turning and just clicks. I believe it is not turning enough to be securely on. I have replaced the gas cap many times to have the same problem over and over. I have also had a strong gas smell for a long time. I often notice it when stopping to pay a toll e.t.c. I have also noticed gas on the outside of the car on the body around and below the gas cap when I get out of the car. It is definitely coming out of the cap. The problems were there before I had the tank replaced and after. I believe that the threads that the gas cap screws on two are old and possibly corroded or stripped so that the cap can not tighten properly. My question is, Is this something that is a part of the tank or is it a separate part that can be replaced. I believe it must be separate because the tank was replaced and I still have this issue. I would just like some clarification on how all this works before I take it back to the guy who replaced the tank. Thank you.

Re: Gas Leak

You need a different gas cap to fit the aftermarket tank. Dig around a bit, there have been threads on this before, or wait for someone who's dealt with it to come by and tell you which gas cap you need to buy.

Re: Gas Leak

Well, I have had this problem long before the tank was replaced. And the problem has not changed after replacement. That would mean that the cap is somehow linked or specific to the tank. Is this correct or is the cap and or gas filler neck something separate?

Re: Gas Leak

The original cap may have swollen or otherwise worn causing it not to fit the original filler neck. But it's been widely reported that the aftermarket tanks use a different thread gas cap. Two different problems with a similar solution, you need a different gas cap.

Jump on google, type in some combination of "Dorman Spectra tank filler neck gas cap site:thirdgen, org" and hit the enter key... Start reading until you see someone talking about contacting Dorman (iirc) and being told the part number of the cap they needed.

I just used that exact search string, and it's the first result on the page.

Or start carving the threads on your gas cap til it fits.

Thank you. I tried to get the cap with number #6819 that was listed in the link you provided but it was no stock at Auto Zone. The were able to order the one with part number 10819. Hopefully this works. Also, could someone answer my question about whether fuel filler necks typically come with a new tank or whether they would have put my old one back in with the new tank. Thank you. I will be asking the person who replaced my tank also but any additional info would be appreciated. Thanks again for your time.

Re: Gas Leak

They're available either way. But technically the filler neck is soldered or brazed into the tank. Most people aren't going to take the time to remove the old filler neck and transfer it to the other tank. It's added work, and finicky work at that. Easier or faster to just buy the tank with the filler neck already installed.

Re: Gas Leak

Hey all, thank you for the information. I went to AutoZone and the cap with part number #6819 was a no stock in their system. However, I gave them the part number 10819 and it came up under ACDelco so I ordered it. I received it yesterday and drove around a bit. It turned easily and tightened perfectly with no gas leaks or spray after driving. It fits perfectly. The box had this info on it. ACDelco ACD# GT195 GM# 22591476. Not sure what any of that means but thought I would share. Thanks again.
