You'll need an airpump and route hoses from it to the exhaust manifolds and to the cat. You'll also need a diverter valve so the air flows to the manifolds when cold and switch to flow to the cat when hot.

Well, we didn't get it done, due to lack of parts. So now her car is parked.

By state law (to my knowledge) you have up and until 10 days past the end of the month that the tags expire to get the tags renewed without penalty. I had to go through the same thing when my 'bird was having trouble on the ol' emissions dyno.

HTH!

It wouldn't pass the visual for the AIR system or the sniffer?

I've heard of some people around here *cough* just welding dummy AIR tubes onto their headers and cat and putting a smog pump on and passing. Not that I'll mention any names, but he doesn't like thirdgens lately.

Personally, I had flanges welded onto my cats, stainless fittings on the air tubes to the cats, and I just run the smog pump without any connections to it. I have a box of smog crap I bolt on (takes 3 hours) and run a day a year.

the legal stuff....

ok, in the state of arizona, you have 30 days after your tags expire.
(ex: if your tags expire in Dec 03....then you have until the last day of January 04 to get new tags.) If a cop pulls you over during this time, he can ONLY give you a warning. Nothing else.

You will get late fees....i think the max for 1 month is like 5 dollars (pretty sure it depends on the year of your car).

If you can't get something rigged up....do what i do. Find a valid address in someplace out of town that doesn't require emissions (payson, sedona, pinetop, young......). First, get a new License...give them your fake address. Once you get your new ID/License, tell them you need to register your car. Once they bring up that address, then you wont have to worry about emissions.

I have been doing that for the past 4 years. They give you your plate/tags/ID/License right at the DMV now, so you don't have to worry about anything. Just remember, if you get pulled over and a cop asks why you have an out of town address...let him know you are just in town for a little while.

Just a note....i have been pulled over 3 times since i have been doin that, and they have never even asked why my address was out of town.

Ok, there's my opinion. Hope it helps someone.

Good luck and happy new year.

This is what I have found:
Arizona Vehicles Registered Outside of the Vehicle Emissions Control Area

Vehicle owners who reside outside the vehicle emissions control areas of metro Phoenix and Tucson, and whose vehicle has been identified as "emissions test required" may be granted an exemption from testing (Code 52 Exemption) as long as the vehicle is not used to commute to the owner's principle place of employment or to school within the control area. Residents applying for Code 52 exempt status may contact a Motor Vehicle Division automobile registration office or obtain the necessary form here (23 KB; 03/99). An original Code 52 certificate of exemption must be completed and include the following:

Photocopy of current vehicle registration for each vehicle.

Photocopy of a current utility bill in the name of the applicant, identifying the physical address of applicant's residence, or a photocopy of the property owner's tax evaluation notice listing the residence township, range and section.
The Motor Vehicle Division will automatically exempt vehicles by the residence zip code. However, some zip codes are considered partially exempt, meaning part of the zip code is inside the test area and part is outside. These partial zip code areas initially require the vehicle owner to apply for a Code 52 exempt status. Once done, that vehicle will be retained on the exempt file as long as it is in the possession of the original claimant.

If I read this right I need to provide a current utility bill for the "fake address". How did you bypass this???

I'm having the same problem. My car hasn't had tags in a few months. It passed under load but failed the idle test, and haven't had anytime to fix it yet. Last time this happened it was $8 a month that the tags where expired.

They're letting you pass with a 4bbl?

Interesting.

They're starting to hammer people here who are found to be in Albuquerque several times weekly but registered outside the county. There are lots of people who live in Los Lunas, Rio Rancho, etc. They're trying to make them pass emissions despite their county. I think they should just entice those counties to pass emissions laws.

Wow, if I hadn't totalled my car I'd be smack in the middle of this conversation. That thing had every emissions part imaginable gutted and/or removed.

The previous advice is the correct thing to do to beat the system, just remember that if Mr. cop is reading these boards, he might just help us get pulled over for talking about this on a public forum.

She passed the snifer with flying colors. But when they popped the hood it got ugly. The inspector called over some other people and they just stared. So we failed the visual due to a lack of parts and hoses. Now we need to remedy this quick! Any suggestions, help, or expertise would be great. Thanks.

hey sorry man....havent been here in a few days.

i have done it with 2 different cars, and my roommate is doing it right now. I went to the DMV on sossaman and main st the first two times, and the dmv in gilbert last time.

when i first went in, i was gettin a new id, so for my ID i had them put my PO BOX address on there. Its an address in Young, AZ. Then i went to a different window and got my registration.

if they say your car needs to be emission tested, just tell them you live there and you just came in town to get registration.

edit:

hey i jus saw that you said the car came from out of state...it might be different since the car was never registered here...

still might be worth a try...

Dude, CALL ME! Getting a fake address because your car doesn't pass a VISUAL is just retarded. Thats the easiest thing to fake. I could see using a fake address if you had a hot rod with a 304 advertised cam, 11:1 compression and 259degrees duration at .050 aluminum headed monster (oh wait, thats my car ), but not for a stock 350!!!! Gimmie a call I can meet up with you guys on Sunday, I"m not doing much.

You are going to have to wait now. We put her car in the shop to repair the damage done to it by DAS, so our insurance can go after them. It will be in the shop for about 10 days. Then we can work on the emissions stuff!
