I'm back to a 305, 638 does not mean 350.

So I am removing the head on my T/A and I get it off, grab a ruler and measure the bore size. 3.75 inches....hmmm? Now that there isn't any wires in the way I take a rag and wipe off the cast numbers on the back of the block...sure enough 5.0L. Well, what that means is that for the last 6 months I thought I had a 350 because some bonehead says in a block identifying thread said "if the motor has the 638 on the underside it means 350". Well, some of you may know that would be false but I searched and searched and found no info to back that up or prove it wrong. So 350 I thought I had which makes sense why I am beating cars a 5.0 shouldn't. I'm talking G35's, Z's, hanging with my bro's modded GTP which does low 13's.

Now with that 350 thinking I bought some 350 things, heads from Schwartz, injectors off of Tiresmokin', 350memcal from TPIparts, and most importantly a $125 350 gasket set from autozone. I'm sure I can swap it, but I ordered it 2 days ago, and now I will have to wait another 2-3 days to get the right one.

Anyway, end of rant. Give me your thoughts.

Does the vin show a 350 engine?
Or, did the last owner just tell you that the car had one?

Just wondering,

George

No Vin is for the Lb9. The last owner said the previous owner put new head gaskets in. The previous owner put in a new radiator. It's strong. Really strong for a 305.

Well I wasn't gonna pull the whole engine apart just to find out and then put it all back together. Why I opened it all up now is because I blew a head gasket. I would never do this for fun. I've been working on this thing for almost 15 hours and I still don't even have the passenger head off yet.

I think putting it back together will go much faster. I'm just taking my time so I don't break anything. I need to buy a 90* brass bend for the driver AIR tube. I'm also cleaning the hell out of this thing. It's all covered in rusty coolant and grease. I will also touch up scratches as well.

Anyone have any RUNNER straightener *****? Mine are all dented up. Thinking of taking them to a music shop. They repair dents to horn instruments all the time I'm sure.

The engine is back together and cleaner than it has been in probably 10 years. Problem is it won't start. Tony C is on his way over as we speak to see if he can work some magic. Wish us luck.

Good luck.

My engine was pretty filthy when I tore it down. There were nice sludge chunks in the lifter valley that reminded me of burned pancake pieces.

(just finished my HSR install a few hours ago)
