Holtville (debriefing)
For those of you that didn't go ...
You missed out on some great action! Mike was messing around with some VW guys, yet managed to do that on worn SO2.
James learned how to lose it and got excellent in car video (and a Flame-Thrower spanking
) I learned how to convert an SS to a Z71, as well as loose converter + balding Kumhos + slippery track = :nono: I was able to get exterior video of the runs from Mike and James (as well as an LS1.com member), and Mike got James and I on video too. But Mikey, while you shot James's 180, you missed me taking out that black VW on the outside of turn one.
:lala: You guys gotta see the video, it came out great ... for ametuer cameramen.
All in all, we are f&%^ng dead tired. Holtville spanked us hard ... and came back for thirds!
Can't wait to run the 3rd gen out there. :hail:

Now now, I came in too hot and you know it. What I was trying to keep you on my bumper so you would take my line just as hot and loose it exiting the turn. However I didn’t have the stopping power to pull it off. So tell me about the tape is it the bomb or what?

here's a lesson for all you guys...The 4th gen SS's may be new and powerful, but when it comes down to it they can't get it 'up' quite like a thirdgen does

This is what we saw for a total of about 7 hours yesterday....boring

and here's RRs answer to the above boredom problem. But luckily we only ran like that for a few hundred miles yesterday.

I am going to try and get this damned Windows XP to capture my vid's. It was the schiznit!
As for following your "line" ... "I ain't nobody" like those other fools. :sillylol: But I gotta be honest, that's when I got too cocky/hot and lost it on T4.
After seeing James pics, I realized I had my cemara but didn't take any pictures.
That would have been a nice shot ... 100+ MPH.

Edit: Dang it James
... it's interesting thinking back how I took the routes and then looking at this map. Gives you a better perspective on the "lines" you selected.

well FWIW I spun out on T1, T3 and T4. But Coming out of all the turns I would give too much throttle for the amount of grip. I noticed when Mike stabbed the throtttle in his SS that wasn't a problem. I don't know if it was my tires, polyurethane suspension components (bind), TPI torque, or ???. Mike was definately stabbing the throttle coming out as I was, if not more and wasn't having those issues.
I wanted to do a complete drift around T1 so I kept on trying as long as nobody was behind me. But sometimes I got too stupid. With that in mind I think a better apporach for a track is to try and tackle a certain aspect of the track and work on that for a session or day.

from the video it looks like I was doing about 4800 RPM in 4th, so that's about 107 MPH on the front straight. T1 I remember going through at about 50-55+ MPH. I only used 3rd and 4th gears on the whole track.

Yeah, Mike got your spin out on T4.
I think that was the most slippery part of the track. I lost it twice there, and once (going way too hot) on T1. But you guys enjoyed the smoke show. :sillylol: On T1, I was pushing hard through there ... to the point I didn't need to steer. Just play with the throttle and kinda keep it straight.
As for traction and stomping the gas, you're right. Mike T. (Megabit) was stomping very hard and not loosing grip. I think it has more to do with the LS1 not producing as much low end torque as your's (or mine with a converter). They peak at 4500 rpms (torque-wise), and he was at or under 3000 rpms on most turns (from what I saw). But even so, we all were running on the same tires (less Mike P.), but your's were the ones with the most tread.

how does your video look george? can you see me attempting to drift T1? I need to think up a better dampning system for my mount. it works good for the street but it can't take the abuse at Holtville and still be acceptable.
here you are driving by at 110+ MPH with your fireshooting exhaust....

Not as well as Mike mentioned, he may have to show us, but you can tell you are on the ragged edge of traction.
I have to make something for my car, especially after seeing your video.
Although video shots from outside (similar to ESPN) are cool to. Maybe we can que them together and make a big one.
I know my video over hangs some of your interior shots.
That is sooo swEEEEEt. :sillylol: Thanks!

Videos are done
... but since I am running out of space (very quickly, only room for two more @ <6.2MB combined), I can only post three.
Warning, they are just under 5MBs in size (only 29 seconds each
, but large viewing area
). All video shots are from the entry into T1 (less ... intro).
This is Holtville!
Dry, desolate, and a **** load of fun. You can see the "tower" I tried taking footage from, but it had a sheetmetal "floor" and was bouncy when you moved.
Mike leading James around the course.
Mike, turn up your computer speaker volume, you'll hear your Z28 as you start the front straight. Also, you can see our "host" (Mike Tarrant aka:"Megabit" enter)
The SS taking out an Import on the outside.
Freaking little VW Jetta/Passat had a (aftermarket) turbo and was keeping up with me.

you should point out jethro's trailer and his ordinance lawn decorations....well maybe not
good video's. You can tell I was coming into that corner a little too hot. I really need to heal/toe it. I was sorta faking in and it showed many times in the fact I couldn't brake/downshift/transistion to well and therefore wasn't very efficient and becaome a little too wild at times.
I can't wait for the next event. Maybe somethings coming up at the streets of willow or a auto-X event. I think wider wheels/tires would do me good......maybe the 17x9.5 firehawk wheels. Even though I don't think they are that attractive, function, I think, will override my thoughts on them.

You know it’s amazing I drove six hundred miles round trip knowing I was going to destroy a five hundred dollar set of tires. Why you ask? I will tell you why; because I had two true enthusiasts that wanted to go and push their cars to the limit. James and Georgie you guys are hard core and I take great pride in our wrecking crew we are truly ruthless together. As for the rest of you “enthusiasts” it’s a damn shame. The three of us drove all that way in our daily drivers and beat the **** out of them all the way there, there, and on the way back. But amongst all of the anarchy we all knew if something went sideways the other guys had their back and wouldn’t leave anyone stranded. This is the kind of trust and camaraderie life long relationships are built on. Hey guys you only live once it’s ok to roll the cubes once in a while. So don’t just sit there in front of your computer and talk about it. Do it!

Looks like you need about +2lbs of air in the tire and another -1 1/2* camber
When I’m at the track I run 40 psi in the front and 38 in the rear which heats to 43-44 in the front and 42 in the rear. As far as camber goes you are absolutely correct, the car has entirely too much positive camber in it. I need to have it aligned before I get into my AVS Sports.
I don’t see the problem Mike. Just turn them around, and wear out the other side next time.
Believe you me I would if I could. I tried that with my SP9000's and like my Bridgestone’s they were directional. The car just didn’t feel right. I couldn’t tell you why it wasn’t happy at all.

Exactly, I couldn't have said it better myself. While you bastards where out having a kick *** time at HV, I was back in Indy at the Performance Racing Industry show. Very cool time and downtown Indy has some great places to eat and drink. This show makes SEMA look like a yard sale. Only people that are legitimately part of the trade can attend so it's a "no public allowed" deal. I had a nice chat with Larry Dixon, Dick LaHaie, Alan Johnson and ran in to Billy Boat, Larry Morgan, and a bunch of other racers that were there BSing with there sponsors. This place was filled with only hardcore racing stuff. I worked it for 3 days and my *** (and feet) were smokin. A must go if you can get credentials.

Don't worry Barry, we've got a spot reserved just for you and Chris next time out.
:sillylol: Sounds like a b!tchin' "event".

Personally, I'd rather go to Rosemond and run Willow. A much better course. Holt is cool but a LLLLLOOOOONNNNNGGGG drive as you guys found out. BORING but I'm sure you guys played plenty of cat and mouse.
Yeah....PRI was sweet! Bought a new TIG from Lincoln too. Should have it by Xmas. Merry to me
My company is just now thinking about getting into performance so it was perfect for me since I have personal interest as well. Made it much funner. Spent 4 hours at the Speedway Museum. I think I may have to go there for the SAP USGP next year. Hard to believe that back in the 20's they engineered straight 6's and 8's with DOHC and 4 v's/cyl. Even had some with superchargers making 150hp. I'll post some pics when I get them back.

Holtville...taking a shower
Well Jethro wont let you use his shower.....(it's the one with the BIG bucket on top and is next to his trailer.......
The only alternative (if you dont have a motorhome) is the irrigation ditch as you drive in.
I'm sure the track hasnt improved since i was last there 2 years ago.......try running a low ground clearance car there.....impossible without hammering the car.

this is for the Blue Pony:
The only inspection done at the track was when they verified that the $60 was real legal tender. If it can be driven then it can be ridden'. Hell, Mike made a few runs with his tire in that condition.

Mike. You know what I wasnt there. So I hope that none of that was aimed at me. First off. I personally beat the hell out of my car everyday HOPING something will break! just so i can replace it with something better. I leave my 305 SMOKING sometimes after pure boredom and run up and down Lytle Creek Rd 4 or 5 times back and forth. You know that I am VERY into my car and learning it true potential. Having been out of work for 2 months and having no $$, 60 is a lot, plus the food, and gas money. If I had been working, I would have been there. Jennifer was actually dissapointed that I chose to celebrate her 21 b-day with her rather than go racing "yeah, believe it or not she said i should have gone racing.. WHAT A GAL!". If they do this event again, Im DEFINITLY IN!. Ill go down to my Sisters place the night before in SD and drive there in the morning and go there the night of racing and head back the next day. Her living down there makes me a little more comfortable in case something breaks. But likw you mentioned, ruining your tires, gas money, etc. It just isnt practical for having 0 $$. I do find myself an F-Body enthusiest and for anyone who will question that, well, they know where they can go. Ive neglected my Z28 and my site a little lately, but thats due to my hard work getting a job and doing odds and ends. Mike. If you feel that I have offended yourself or any other by this post, you have my number. However, if that comment WASNT aimed at me. This post is for those who think i flaked out! Beware. Jason, this was not aimed at you. You and I developed a dialogue several times before this event in which I told you if I were in the same position I would spend it with my girl friend and not go racing. You only turn 21 once in a lifetime and I commend your decision to celebrate with her. As far as you being a true enthusiast, you are right there. You participate a lot more than the majority of “members” however it’s understandable when you cant. But the times you made the trip from Riverside to come out and play is again highly commendable. If we had more of that from other people just think about how much fun we would have. George, James, and I are not right in the head and much like a light switch we all can go from normal to psychopath at the throw of a switch. A lot of that is due to the fact we have been blessed with the ability to afford any major mechanical failures. In closing Jason you are all right and when you recover from your time off I am sure you will be operating in the same or even larger capacity than you once were.

Watch out, Lobster alert!
j/k Jason.
Jason, that comment from MP (which I agree with completely) is aimed to those who talk-the-talk, but don't have the ***** to walk-the-walk and support their high and mighties (or the club).
Caution: serious rant mode ahead ... This is one thing that frustrates me as an "officer" of this club, trying to get people out from behind their keyboards. (I do understand we have some students here, and I give them more leniencies) The events should be the priority, and the message board should be to plan them/recap (or troubleshoot problems with the cars), not to be the main arena and just
. I'd like to see all the members at most of the events we have, but seems like this is just an internet club, with little to no actual events. Anyone care to tell me when we have had over 10 cars/members participate in an event (other than the cruise a while back) for this year? "But, it's the Holiday season" ... yeah, yeah, yeah, that's no excuse! We can still do things. Maybe not with the cars, but soemthing. Like Kevin has proposed Dave&Busters, or Speedzone (or what ever it's called), as examples only. Seems like the "core group" has vanquished.
Because of this I am thinking of initiating a "status of member" seperated by Active and Non-Active members. Those who are active will get personal invites (maybe from me) to take part in (and maybe special) events. As well as have upgraded profiles, voices (in the club), etc ... Non-Active will just get notices of generic events, which they can choose to participate or not (chances are the later
) and a generic profile. All you would need to do to elevate yourself to "Active" status is become active (wouldn't require your 3rd gen to be running, if it is a project at the time). But if your participation drops below a predefined level, your status drops. As I was telling Mike and James, that is one thing I like about the LS1 crowd (or 4th gen/east coast guys for that matter), they go out and do things. I want to elevate this club to that status, but I need the members to support such actions. The hardcore group has dwindled to a meare 5-7 members, it need to be a majority, not a minority.

) soap box ...
All you would need to do to elevate yourself to "Active" status is become active (wouldn't require your 3rd gen to be running, if it is a project at the time). my comments were directed to those who will tear it up on the street but won't commit to do it in a safe, legal environment. It was only a day. It was $60 plus gas (~$40). We all brought some snacks/drinks and didn't go out for food until we all got home. You can drive you car as hard (or light) as you want. Everyone was there to have a good time, not trade paint or do damage to their cars, but yes that can happen, but not the day we went. This experience was nothing more than taking that fewway on/offramp at any speed you want to for a 20+ minutes, or a long as you wanted. I also wanted to get accross that what you think you may know, when you get to the track- thinking it and executing it are worlds apart for those who haven't done it before. As stated I spun out several times. Each time I experienced something new. Only when I started getting stupid did I real myself in for the day.
Myself and george have some great video. I have my in-car camera running when I spun out at 55+ and 45+ while taking some turns hard. There were two porshes there that were prepped reasonably well and they kept spinning out. But everybody gives enough space to compensate for errors, either yours or the other drivers'.
