head porting

Anyone know of a good place here in SoCal that ports heads? Just wondering where I can find a reputable place and an estimate of how much it might cost. Also, does porting heads mess with the emissions much? I've heard that it has little effect. Any experiences and info will be greatly appreciated.

If you got a dremmel or high speed drill you can do it yourself. It's not too difficult. Just takes time, patience..lots of it! You can't cut corners once you start. The last port is just as important as the first port...

I did my L6 250 (and my brother's 67 Nova ll 350) and the fella who dyno's the motor looked at the work and said I gained about 30 rwhp. He then proceeded to tell me the most important area to massage which I didn't do too well. It's HARD DEDICTATED work but an accomplishment nonetheless.

But whatever you do, DON'T FORGET TO (tell them to) GASKET MATCH YOUR PORTS!

Mr. Dyno Don, our local mechanic. Currently he is porting and polishing (and matching the intake to) a set of heads for my Father's 1978 Corvette.

He is first on the list: Here

leo037,

$550 is a really good price. Is this a place that deals with F-bodies routinely because I'm looking for a place with good expertise. If you have the name of the place, I might be interested.

CHEVYTOWN,

This is not something I want to do myself. I'd like to have it professionally done but 30rwhp is pretty darn good for doing it yourself.

I'll keep searching anyways. It should probably be noted that the porting I want is for LT1 heads, not Gen I, if that makes any difference. Probably isn't much of a difference, but from what I've read on the LT1 message board at camaroz28.com, it would be wise to find a shop that has experience with LT1 heads.

Thanks hometown. But those 30 were on me L6.

On my brother's Nova we gained a whole lot more...it was pulling 304rwhp when the wheels stopped hooking up to the rollers! And mind you, stock compression/cam/rotating assembly. We didn't have #'s before hand but the thrills in the "Devil's Hot Rod" changed 10 fold...

Whatever you do it's gonna be worth it!
