Has any one here dealt with a code 54

Yesterday evening I start my car and I see the check engine light on. So I go look for my code key and I could not find it. I start the car again and the code does not come on. Im thinking o.k I must be seeing things. So I go for a drive and every thing is fine.. Im coming home and the car is idling weird, then there is loss of performance as the car just sputtered down the road, then flash Oh there you are, how much money do you want Now.. I make it back and I check the code and it's a 54 So I look it up and read the low voltage problem and something about a Quad driver, What's a quad driver? Then I read a tech article as Im thinking o.k it's probably just a relay, but it said if the relay fails the oil pressure switch will run the pump..? Very odd. So has any one had a code 54 and what was needed to fix it?

Branden, Rusty was getting this code intermittently for about two weeks on his 92 RS before the fuel pump finally gave out. I would check both your fuel pump relay (and the wiring) as well as the fuel pump fuse. Was the pump replaced recently? If not then you might want to start thinking about getting a new pump, we replaced Rusty's in my driveway in about 4 hours.

No biggie on the gears, you have the lower the rear end is all but not need to drain the diff fluid or anything. Just have to unbolt the LCAs, pan hard, and then all the stuff holding in the tank
Does it still sound like the pump is priming well? - not that it would mean anything

OK on 10/19/98 My fuel pump and filter was changed at Gm.. What a trip just a month shy of 5 years old.. It probably has seen it's day, another thing I am concerned over reviewing this report is customer declined intake gasket right rear intake manifold starting to leak.. They must have fixed that some where else or it would be leaking like crazy by now. How ever Gm did do a lot of replacing on the car a couple starters a new AC compressor orifice tube ignition module a distributor, mass air flow sensor, idler arms, oil filter adapter gasket& seal water pump& hoses the list just goes on and on.. I tell you when I bought the car it smelled like brand new inside, and the engine looked perfect like it was well maintained every part looked new, comparing it to what the Flamed1 looked like, I said this is a must buy, this car would be awesome for my fiance. After 2 years later I must say it's not as nice as it was. Some Tlc and it could get back that way..

You have changed the fuel filter since then right? Otherwise that might be a reason why the pump would be going out

No I have not had the fuel filter changed yet. Maybe that would be a good idea though.

Well I did seem to have a extra relay and after that I have not seen a code.. I drove it and no light came on at all. But I am dead in a hole or 2. I went and had Don take a look and he found a few wires burned from laying on the exhaust manifold. But I must keep my fingers crossed b/c that may not be the fix. With this car it pulls tricks.. I'll still get that fuel filter replaced also..

Just stop by your favorite parts store get a fuel filter, pick up some lunch for Don, and see if you can sweet talk him into putting your IROC onto the lift and changing the fuel filter for ya, as he was kind enough to change for me on the RS a while back - and man did some disgusting stuff ooze out of it!

Ya that would be a good idea But he is major busy right now he is flooded with cars and work. I think I'll just wait till I go on vacation in a week or so and drop it off and I have a list of things that need done. Spark plug wires, fuel filter thermo gasket it's leaking, oil&filter, front pads and rotors, picked up a set of cross drilled slotted rotors like Nigel found, Lug nuts E brake cable adjusted, gear box adjusted, swapping in the 58mm tb and 89 style throttle cable. So ya I have a few things to be done.
