what the hell is this below the Charcoal canister?

when i was making my new intake, i came upon a round plastic globe type thing, it was mounted below the charcoal canister pan. it had a vacuum line running to it.. which i traced this single line to a T junction off the plenum.

what the hell does this thing do/did? from what i can tell, nothing. i removed it, unplugged it, and plugged up the hose. didnt do a damn thing to the car's driveability.

is this thing needed in some way? the car used to be a 305 TBI 5 speed.. which is now the 350 TPI 6 speed.

anyone know?

Does it look like a coconut? I think it has something to do with the air vacuum pressure that controls the levers and switches on the dash.

Well I'm not entirely sure, but that's what I heard. Don't take my word for it!

It could also be some sort of cold war-era spy device. Or where the previous owner hid the drugs.

yes! orb of power!

edit:

its the factory vent canister. if you took out the heat, you dont need it for the air doors... assuming you dont plan on using any other vac accessories, like cruise, you can remove it.

It is a Vacuum Reservoir which stores vacuum for the Dash Vents, Defroster and Heater & A/C Controls so that when your vacuum fluxuates due to throttle position or drains on the vacuum system such as Power Brake Booster the vents do not open and close by themself. Make sure if you remove it that at the very least you plug the Vacuum Line or you will have a Vacuum Leak.
