Now if I could just get one made that would actually work on a serpentine setup Camaro with the battery still in it's stock location. Otherwise it's having the tube riding on the hot water return tube or relocate the battery to get a firechicken style one

That's thermal coating ....and I think it will get the job done.
And no...my reasoning is...why dump a lot of cash on feel good things. When "one" has the cash "one" should put it where it will do the most good.
Or as the Grump once said "get all the variables under control"
So with that said, I think you must have misunderstood my reasoning.

That one looks like an oval to 3.5 inch. Need to find out where he got the piece next to the throttle body. What Don needs to do is get a mandrel made up that spreads the 3.5" tubing to the shape of the throttle body oval. Just money Don.
There are no restrictions in his air intake system. One thing I would do if I had his car is box in the airfilter so that it can't draw hot air from the engine bay. Cold air only. Allen

Okay, I am planning on starting to build my own CAI and would it be better to have the filer, K&N of course, located up where the factory location is at or cut a hole and mount it under where the factory one goes? I have seen pics of it done both ways. Just wanting to know which would be better for more HP gain? I have an 89 Firebird Formula 350 with MAF incase you are wondering.

If you isolate the filter from the underhood heat, putting it in the stock location with an intake at the bottom with some baffelling to keep rain from soaking your air filter is probably a better choice for a daily driver. Don's system is designed to be changed over for use at the track, but he puts the filter in the stock location on the street to keep water out of the intake.
