Don heard from the manager of the lodge today. He needs to know how many people and cars will make it up for the BarBQ, and since he needs to order food by this weekend for next week, he needs the count by Sunday. There is a poll posted at sc3g.org

Don, I presume we are going to take a route up the 57 to either the 60, the 10, or the210 east to go to the mountains. Should we set up a meeting point in the San Gabriel Valley to meet Lon and rangedahl on the way?

Major blow against my chances of making the cruise...
I've been having problems with my bird overheating. Long story short, I did everything I could think of to remedy this...
I just came back from a test drive, and even with the current 60-55* weather, my bird is still overheating... I watched as the needle passed 220* and sure enough, the smell of coolant/antifreeze started to protrude.
Unless I can find a shop in the SGV that can locate the problem tomorrow (today), I guess I'll have to cancel...

Radiator cap is new. It's a 15 lbs cap. The only thing I haven't checked is the water pump. I think I'm leaking coolant though, but I can't find the leak if my life depended on it.
At this point, I'm willing to spend the big bucks on an entirely new system, if that's what it takes to get her back on the road.
BTW, it's nice to see a fellow nightowl on this board.
heh, i live at night... check the weephole in the waterpump.. should be somewhere near the center on top if you can see it... if that has coolant coming out of it... byebye water pump... replace that guy... everything else sounds to be in order... you might want to flush the system when you have the thermostat off too... undo the t-stat hosing, disconnect the bottom hose on the radiator and put a hose on full blast into the intake manifold... get some gunk out if there is any stuck in there... also you might want to test the new thermostat first.. its not uncommon for those to be defective straight from the store... just boil some water and drop it in, if it opens, youre good!

I'll check the pump in the morning. If that's not it, I suspect the (forgive my newbie-ness) water inlet (correct term?). Last time I changed the thermostat, I noticed that the threads where almost completely shot, and I had to use some gooey "instant thread" stuff to get it to stick...
water inlet, gooseneck, t-stat housing... same difference... lol, yeah, mine leaks a little bit... but a new manifold and t-stat housing will change that soon enough
this is kind of a trick that might get me flamed... but i drill 4 holes in the thermostat... small guys.. like 1/16th" to keep air pockets from forming, just make sure you clear all the debris off the t-stat before you put it in, you dont want little shards of metal floatin around everywhere...

Thanks for all the help! I'll be busy tomorrow getting my bird back on the road.

(Sorry for hijacking the thread... )

Actually, I do! If the engine seizes up, I can justify getting a new 383 and everything that comes with it!

That's the last, official meeting place before climbing up the 18. Other meeting places have been arranged, but I'm not familiar with the specifics (except for those of us who are starting at Don's shop, or the meeting place along the 60)

My youngest daughter works at Starbucks. She closed last night and at the end of the day they let the employees bring home any of the premade sandwiches that are left over. Otherwise they have to throw them away. I have 9 or 10 sandwiches in my refrigerator to bring on the cruise tomorrow. I figure we will need to have lunch somewhere. I won't have enough for everyone, but I'll be happy to share until they are gone.
I suspect we will probably be there closer to 10:45 or so because of the stop in Diamond Bar to meet Lon. I'll send you a p.m. with my cell #, and you can call Saturday morning to let us know when you'll be there. We have all day to make a two hour drive, so I don't see the need to leave anybody behind to save 15 minutes.
Have you been up the 215 lately? The construction at the 215/91/60 interchange can make it a real "bear" to get through.
Someone from the Inland Empire who has been through there since my last trip might be able to give better info on the status of the construction, or more precisely how bad the delays are through there.

You're going to be there at 9:00 Allen? Oh no. I didn't know what time we were metting.
I haven't left the house yet! I'm going to be there at 9:30. I think I can find my way to that park though, if I get left behind.
