Paging Lon Re: SCFB message Third Gen Firebird Engine choices?
Lon, hmm.. tried to send this to your @home email, realizing right after I did it, there is not more @home email address

Does that article show any real details on the exhaust setup? I'm
looking for info on what the parts are like, such as primary tube size,
Ypipe, dual/single? exits, etc.
Having a hard time deciding if I should buy the whole kit, or just a ZZ4
crate and add my own stuff. My block I was going to rebuild is not up to it
(cracked)
Thanks!
GP

I found it! Super Chevy issue May 2001, page 28 titled "Heart Transplant".
The ZZ4 engine transplant kit, GM p/n: 10185077. Specifically designed for
'82-'87 carbureted 305's. It includes a 345 hp ZZ4, new exhaust manifolds,
dual catalytic converters, a flowmaster exhaust system, new PCM, Corvette
tansmission components to improve the shifts, lots more. Also included new
replacement trailing arms with poly bushings. And best of all includes CARB
EO #. OK, I can finally make my recomendation of an engine, (actually an
entire assembly) to replace your tired 305.

No details on the diameters given. They do show a picture of the exhaust system in pieces and state that it includes a Flowmaster muffler. Contact the Muffler Man in Placentia (714)524-7818. They are listed as having installed the exhaust and can fill in the blanks regarding the kit. BTW, I updated my profile on this site, so you could have found my new e-mail that way. I haven't decided if I'll keep that one just for TDS stuff and get another for personal e-mails. I'll be sending an e-mail out to evryone in my address book soon. Lon

The exhaust is stock 89-92 350 TPI exhaust manifolds, they have 2 1/4" (actually 2 1/8") outlets, to stock 2.25" dual cat y-pipe, dual 2.25" cats, and a flowmaster 3" catback to one of their mufflers.

I guess your right, not good. Try great. From the link Kevin attached "Performance: During development of the HO 350 Camaro conversion, a prototype HO 350 engine equipped with a computer-controlled Quadrajet carburetor and all emission controls required for this application, produced 308 horsepower (at 5000 rpm) and 365 lb-ft torque (at 3500 rpm). The Chevrolet Race Shop's 1987 Camaro test vehicle equipped with an emission-legal HO 350 ran a quarter-mile elapse time of 13.83 seconds at 98 mph." What does your car currently run? Now of course it can be improved with CARB legal headers (of course SLP is my recommendation). Look over the list of everything you get by ordering just this one p/n. The REALLY COOL thing is it comes with a CARB number. So you are still emissions legal in CA. If you want to hassle ordering all the pieces separatly, then by all means do so. I'm imagining it's cheaper to get it all as a kit than separate. But you have all the p/n's to price everything yourself if you desire. If is were me, this is the route I'd take. Have fun, Lon.
Well, 308 HP (flywheel?) sounds good compared to the 160 HP of the original 350, but I also have/had a supercharged LS1, so I'm used to more
If that QM time is real it must be rear wheel.
I will be buying the kit. Now who wants to come over and install it with me? Should be able to order in two more weeks.
PS It currently doesn't run at all which is the point
Well, actually it does "run" but I discount it when you start it and you hear BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG

I think thats net flywheel horsepower, since the gross rating of the ZZ4 engine is 355 HP and 410 TQ.
I recommend having those heads ported, if you can. I have the same ones (ZZ4 heads are the same as L98 Corvette heads). They dont flow too great stock, on the intake side, but they respond very well to porting. I also highly recommend SLP headers, as well. If not, get Hookers.
Good luck with the kit Greg. Did you find the Super Chevy with the write-up on it? I can copy it and fax or mail it to you, if you want.

No, Couldn't find it. If you could fax it that'd be great.
My fax # is 858-695-9501.
How about a home porting kit from Eastwood? What do you think about doing your own porting?
Thanks,
GP

I wont be able to fax it to you until Monday evening.
My dad ported my, and his, heads and intake, using a Standard Abrasives kit. Their link and a porting guide is at http://www.sa-motorsports.com/
