Union Pacific "Big Boy" steam train on display
Union Pacific has been moving the "Big Boy" #4014 steam train from the railroad museum at Pomona to its headquarters in Cheyenne Wyoming for restoration, to put it back into service. I saw the train at the Pomona museum once, and I have been following the moving process online, but now UP has invited the public to come to their railyard in Colton to see the train up close.

The yard is right down the 10 freeway from Fontana Speedway. Is anyone else interested in going and checking it out next weekend? It would have to be Sunday the 2nd or Sunday the 9th for me.

I'm going in the Hospital on Monday for 2 or 3 days and will need a little time to rest up after that so the 2nd won't work for me, but should good for the 9th.

Right now the 9th looks best for me.

I'm going to admit that I'm a train geek. Growing up in Huntington Park, I remember all the wig-wag signals and still looking to get an original one.

Lets plan for the 9th then, next Sunday. Its open from 9am to 4pm. How about we meet at the railyard around 10am? Then we can head somewhere close by for lunch afterwards.

Depending on how many people are going to go we could take one vehicle. Say meet at Don's shop.

Ringo, 87LT and Paradise, are you guys in? If its just a few of us, taking one car would be the best bet. Allan, we'll even chip in for your gas.
Meet at Don's at 8:45am, and leave at 9am?

Pam and I are in depending on how she feels that day but she tires easily. We will meet you in Colton if we can, but we may have to leave early.

The wife and I caught the Big Boy on the first leg of it's journey... it had a 1/2 hour stop in the Cajon pass by Hwy 138.

Yes, 138 was to the rear.... and close to where it intersects the 15 Fwy. It was a really Good Day..... The mountain pass there is great for viewing some huge freight trains working.
