It's all about speed...

I had a graphic demonstration of the difference between my cable-modem vs. dial-up today. Last week while at my friends machine shop he needed me to install some software. The software loaded, but caused an error when trying to install. It said he needed MS IE (I can't recall what ver). He uses AOL as his ISP. I'm toitally unfamiliar with AOL, so I'm thinking maybe they don't use that brouser? I log on and download MS IE ver 6.0. First it downloads the install program, then the actual files for the program. I wasn't paying attention to the download, but it had been running about 10 minutes and I started thinking "what's taking so long?". I look at the estimated time to finish the download, over 1-1/2 hrs still remaining! Well, not installing it that day (only 10 minutes to closing time). I stopped it, created a shortcut to launch it again and told him about it. He decided to log on again and let it run overnight. Today my MS IE informed me there was a new version available to download. So I repeated the process. Here's the comparison; less than 10 seconds to download the install program, less than ONE MINUTE to install the entire files! Just as with cars, speed costs. This example showed me I'm getting what I've paid for. Now if I could just get hold of them to give them my MAC number so my new cable modem will work and I can return their "rental" one (9.95/mo.). It's just not in me to be a renter. Lon

Newer AOL...

Comes with a version of IE bundled with their software and it just installs inself along with all the AOL utilities. Yup IE takes
F-O-R-E-V-E-R on dial up! Maybe rather than upgrading to 6.0 you could download a SP (Service Pack) at your friends shop to upgrade the browser a bit but not have to wait the projected hour and a half for it to download.

If you think your cable is fast, you should experience my school lines. I downloaded 600mb of patches in less than 10 minutes. Do the math and compare that to your *** internet
