Re: Pontiac Firebird Door Hinge Pin Repair Kit

Is this the pin for the lower or upper hinge? If I've read correctly, it's the lower hinge that usually needs to be rebuilt on these cars, correct?

Thanks,

-Levi

Re: Pontiac Firebird Door Hinge Pin Repair Kit

is this the part i need if my doors make loud rubbing noises by rubbing on the ground effects and then loud pop when the door is fully opened? the door seems to be in a valley and sometimes i need to get some momentum to get the door go over this valley and shut it.

Re: Pontiac Firebird Door Hinge Pin Repair Kit

This pin does fit the lower door hinge. The correct way to diagnose a worn pin in your door hinge is to grab the bottom of the door and pull up. If it moves up and down then the pins are worn, and yes that would cause a door to sag and possibly scrape the ground effect.

Most of the time the hinge needs replacement. The piece welded to the door stretches. a bushing can be used or the hole can be welded and drilled.

Re: Pontiac Firebird Door Hinge Pin Repair Kit

lubricate all the hinge pieces with some type of lube like (3 in one) or something of the sort every oil change theses doors are very heavy and when the bushing get wore all the way through guess what wears next, the hing itself then the bushing dosent fit right and hopefully jb weld can make it right again or a new hinge is over $100 and you have to grind the old one off and weld the new one on. but there are some nice ones out there with grease zerks.

Hi,

Welcome to Thirdgen. As of right now I do not have instructions or a how to video on the install of these.

The easiest way that I could tell you to do it would to support the bottom of the door with something so that when you take the old pin out the door is supported. It will also make it easier if you have a friend or someone hold the door in position while taking out and replacing the door pin.

You basically want someone to just hold the door so that it doesn't slip off of the jack, piece of wood, milk crate or whatever you're using to prop the door up.

Re: Pontiac Firebird Door Hinge Pin Repair Kit

Why doesn't someone invent a ball bearing method? I don't get why even in 1987 they were still using bushings for such things. I get the goal of wanting to keep people coming back for repairs, or buying new cars, but it shows total lack of pride in a car company to make a car require so much service that to keep a classic car around and in mint condition requires a 6 figure job and figuring out aftermarket solutions.
