92 RS Suspension

I just baught a 1992 RS Camaro and I will be driving it as a everyday car like many others, well one of the first things I want to do is upgrade the suspension good or bad idea? If so, what should a do I am fairly new to racing scene. Keep in mind this will be a street car.

Hey m_o_s. I think you'll see plenty of replies about sfc, stb, etc, etc but don't forget the true basics. Check the condition of all your present suspension components. Some stuck bushings, endlinks, and what have you aren't found by just looking. You may have to do a little disassembly but you'll know where you stand and not be dissappointed that a given upgrade didn't give the results you anticipated. As any good racer knows, you can't tell crap if you don't have a baseline. Good luck

I'll assume that you have a LO3, Edelbrock is to only company that I know of that makes a strut tower brace for TBI/Carbs. This brace may not work if you convert to Tuned Port.

Also check the rules of what ever racing your going to do, since some classed may ban certain parts.

Sorry, let me rephrase my question. Do you want to drag, autocross, road race, or just generally run the roads?

Then you should do well with a good set of springs and shocks, followed by the stb and sfc.

I would also suggest good brake pads, Hawk HPS or the like.

A "wonder bar" is a brace that bolts between the frame and front sway bar. It renforces the area around the streering box.

I would recommend it in this order....

"Wonderbar" a.k.a. Global West Steering Box Brace $47 (www.yearone.com)

then some high rated tires if you can afford them (I like the
Kuhmo Supra 712s @ P245/50ZR-16) $100/ea

KYB GR-2 struts and Gas-a-Just shocks (p/n 236001/5562) $156

Edelbrock Strut Tower Brace (p/n 5227) $130

Spohn Lower Control Arms $105 w/ Spohn LCA Relocation Brackets $65

Spohn Panhard Bar $85

then get Spohn's Sub Frame Connector (gloss black) $200

Of course your best bet is to fix anything that's broke first. If you want to lower your car then most people would recommend the Eibach kits for like $250 or something like that......also, some people would recommend getting the adjustable LCAs and Panhard Bar, but unless you're doing competition or serious road racing, I would say save your money; especially since it's a daily driver (like mine ) And finally, the reason I put the SFC last is because when you do your exhaust system, it just makes it easier on the guys working on your car to do it all at that same time. Hope this helps.....

Oh yeah, some might suggest getting Lakewood LCAs for like $20 less, but I'm a firm believer in Spohn's quality and I doubt anyone would contest that.

That order sounds good to me!

I'm hoping to do the SFCS and STB this summer, and replace the struts cause I think they're getting worn.

Sorry guys I'm still not sold on the wonderbar for later thirdgens. I guess the name applies here because I wonder what good it does. Are we saying the sway bar bushing/steering box area is weak on all thirdgens or WAS weak in the pre-stb/sfc years? Just wondering...anyway good plan that I think you'll be pleased with m_o_s.

BTW, if you lower your F-body, an adjustable Panhard bar MAY be neccessary.

Now that is true....if you lower your car, the adjustable panhard is very important for regaining your center.....and most would suggest getting the adjustable LCAs as well if it's lowered.

As far as the "wonderbar" goes; it is definately worth it. I noticed a dramatic increase in the tightness of my front end. And yes the steering box area is a profound weakness on the 3rd gens....the frames on our cars twist and flex soooooo much. There's a reason that the IROCs and WS-6s came with them...because they work better than the stock setup.
