i was wondering what the baer brake kits do to change (if at all) the offset or backspacing on the front and/or rear?

for the rear ... stock and 4th gen

if read that the 4th gen rears 2" or 3" inches wider, will adding the baer kit make even wider?

thanks

the baer's won't change any offset ...they replace your brakes with larger pieces... less weight .. same space ...

They add a 1/2" to each front wheel.

1/2" to what?
so they dont change the offset but add a 1/2" to what? the backspacing?

say i wanted to get the SS rims and needed spacers for the front, ive read that you need 1.25" or 1.5" spacers, for the rear im still debating whether i want to change the the rearend or not to a 4th gen rear.

what if i do decide to go with this setup, what kind of spacers, or problems would i run into?

thanks

I think we are getting conflicting stories about the BAER system changing the offset of the front brakes. I have a BAER system that I am doing to install soon but I don't know what the stock dimenstions are. If you can measure the distance from the rotor (where the wheel mounts) to the tip of the spindle where the castle nut is I can tell you if there is a difference. I hope there isn't since I have already bought the spacer.

No brake upgrade will change the offset in the rear. That dimension is dictated by the axles which has nothing to do with the rear brakes.

What about the alcon 4 and 6 piston calipers? Aren't those calipers wider than the baer claw systems made for stock replacements?

the plot thickens .... I don't have a baer system and was making an assumption .. If Tom K says it adds .500" .. I'd believe him .. I think he's been around as much as I .. probably more ... I have 2 different sets of hubs and slip on rotors with aluminum hats .. all made by coleman ... they have the SAME exact spacing as a factory set ..as far as wheel offset .. I assumed the 1LE and baer stuff would be the same .. since I don't have to offset anything else on the system for the calipers to fit the rotors and I'm using factory 1LE brackets ... I guess alot of this has to do with WHICH baer system you get as well .. A-sedan , 1LE , 13" , track ,etc, etc ... there is more than one Baer system for a 3g ......

I can confirm that the Baer kit does indeed push the front wheels out by .5".

I've seen Tom's set up as well a former Car Craft editor's car with Baer brakes. Both have the Track kit. If you guys are having spacers made you'll need to compensate for this.

and the change is only on the front?

what about adding a rear baer kit with a 4th gen rear installed?

would the SS rims still fit?

i love these rims but i dont want to have to put spacers on the back, so im thinking about the 4th gen install to correct for this but will adding a baer change this?

i have rear disc now but what other kind of rear brake upgrade can i do other than a baer?

thanks for the help!!

hey

i was just on the baer website and noticed that they have a track/touring complete kit

"The A/F-Body Track/Touring Combo is a complete bolt on system for use with OE 2 piece spindles and features everything needed to install this system on your 64-72 A-Body or 67-69 F-Body"

any chance this will work on our cars?

I assume that you are looking for some serious braking power. They offer the Track kit for F-bodies. It comes with the modified spindles, the slip on rotors (hell yeah!) and all the other parts you need. To install it, you basicly take your old spindle off, put the new one on, hook everything back up, bleed the system, and you are good to go. You can even have them install it on a drop spindle if you wish (for an additional price of course). The rear disc setup is the exact same thing as the 89-92 stock brakes we have. Check out the price they offer and see if you can get the parts new or used elsewhere. If you want a list of the parts, let me know.. I just converted my drum rear to the PBR disc setup. If you are a good shopper, the only expensive part in the conversion are the calipers.. so you could have that kit for less than $2K.

The 13 inch Baer Track kit will widen the front track 4/10 of an inch on each side. If you plan on using 17 X 9 Camaro SS wheels, you will need 1.5 inch thick wheel adapters that are hubcentric only. If you have the adapters made wheel-centric, their will be a lip on the inside of the adapter that you will not be able to slide past the dust cap on the spindle hub. If you can find someone to make the adapters 1.375 inch thick, that would be the perfect thickness, but I have only found companies that make them in 1/4 inch increments.

If you change the rear from iron drums to the Baer touring kit it will widen the rear track 1/8 of an inch on each side, which is the difference between the thickness of the drum and disc. If you already have 89+ rear disc brakes, don't waste your money on the Baer touring kit, it is similar to the set up you already have.
