There are 2 cables, one going to each rear wheel. They join toggether with a formed sheet metal yoke that has a threaded rod coming from the parking brake lever mechanism. The cables tuck into a formed channel on the inside of the transmission tunnel. If they aren't in those channels they won't pull-up properly. Also another trouble area is where a formed wire in the shape of a "S" holds the passenger side cable away from the exhaust pipe. If that S hook isn't there the cable will rest against the exhaust pipe melting it and causing it to eventually hang up and fail. Some local Members have had them sieze up and not release after releasing the parking brake. There is a flange with a single hole in it that the S-hook attaches to on the body. Make sure you get the correct cables for your car, whether drum or disc rear brakes. They are different cables. The 89+ disc cables are different as well from the earlier disc brake cables. Good luck, Lon.

well anybody else have an answer my car only has one cable going to the drivers side rear for the parking brake and so does my friends 87 trans am there are no provisions on the passenger side for a cable hook up, i guess the reason no one ever replaced the cable it that its mysterious and no body stocks it. i guess im gonna have to make my own or get someone to re weld the old one together or something.
