Inner Tie Rod replacement question

I've gotten myself part-way into replacing the drivers-side tie rod on my '91 bird, to the point where the adjustment sleeve has been cut in half (it was too rusty to remove), and the outer rod has been removed.

My problem is that I can't get the inner rod off. I have removed the nut on the forward (nose) side of the steering rack, so the threaded part of the inner tie rod is just sticking out of the rack. The problem is... I CAN'T GET IT OUT OF THE RACK! I've tried tapping it with a hammer, liquid wrench, etc, but no dice...

It's probably just rusted in, but what I don't know is weather the rack is threaded. What I'm wondering is: Is the rack threaded (so that I have to find a way to get the rod-end to screw out), or can I just use a prybar/pryfork to pop the inner rod out?

Any suggestions about this?

Go to your local auto parts store and get a tie rod removal tool. Most parts stores have some kind of tool loaner program. It looks like a giant fork with a handle. It should pull it right out.

If you're going to re-use the tie-rod, don't use the "pickle-fork" tool; it'll tear up the stud, seal, etc. Use an actual "tie-rod puller". I got mine from Discount Auto Parts for $9. They're a lot easier to use and a lot less messy.

Thanks

Thanks...

I used the fork (rented it from Checker for $6), and out it came...

Both ends were shot, so I wasn't worried about saving anything...

Now I just have to get the toe adjusted right (it has a slight drivers-side pull, so the adjuster needs to be tightened...)

How are you adjusting the toe ...

... after the parts replacement?

If you get a piece of wood or metal that you can attach to the outside of each front wheel, then measure the front and the back to find your toe setting.

I'll be replacing mine soon and adding in the Hotchkis adjusters.
