Thinking of putting 4th gen ABS on my car
Thinking of putting 4th gen ABS on my car
I had a ride in a C-5 'Vette. When my buddy stomped on the brake pedal, it was freakin' amazing! Good thing I had a shoulder belt on!
It got me to thinking. I already have 13" Baer brakes and my car stops pretty good. 108' from 60 MPH. But, that 'Vette's braking power was stunning and it's because of the ABS.
I was thinking the 4th gen brake system must be very similar in design to the 3rd gens and it probably wouldn't be that difficult to swap the ABS system over to our cars.
More later............

You would need (off the top of my head):
4th gen rear with sensor and wiring
front sensors and abs ring + wiring
control box, ECM, and a whole buch of other things.
There was a company that made a piggy back system but they went under. Basicly it's not worth the time or money to graft it on an old car. One day it might be, but not now.

Yes, the newer vette brakes are definitely nice. I thought about incorporating an ABS system like that of the vette or 4th gen setup onto my project car. I know that I'll be going with a Baer/Alcon setup, either the 4 or 6 piston design (not sure about rotor size yet) and I'm sure ABS would make it even better. (Note* I do realize that large of brakes is very much overkill for a street car, but I do have future intentions of perhaps doing auto-x and definitely showing the car.
) Keep us informed on whatever you find out. Thanks.

the hardest part of the convertion will be a sensor setup for the front ... I'm thinking an Astro vans front rotor has a reluctor ring in it and the sensor is mounted in the spindle ... probably the easist t to graft over to a 3rd gen ... the 4th gen won't work .. the sensor is mounted in a complete bearing hub assembly ...
