weight at end of transmission = traction?

i bought a t5 tranny for one of my hotrod buildups from a junkyard the other day. the tranny is supposed to be out of a 90 camaro. but it has a rather large steel weight attached to the tail end of the tranny. about the same place that the torque arm is located. and then the weight extends out about a foot along the axis the driveshaft would be.

does anybody know what this is, and if it helps what....

i am thinking of transfering it to my car when it is fixed, and i just want to make sure it works before too much work.

thanks
andrew

Weight = vibration damping for 6-cyl cars

Not anything to do with performance, only to cover up the roughness of a 6; V8 cars don't have them.

It's not a hot rod trans, it's a 6-cyl one. Count the clutch splines, I'll bet it has 14 [insert gagging sounds and sounds of shearing metal here]

yeah, but i dont really care.

the transmission is going into a 1951 ford f1. it is just gonna be bolted onto a 305, and will be drivin by my mom. so i am not too afraid of it being blown up.
