Loose Steering Wheel
I just bought a 92 GTA and im having some troubles with the steering... there seems to be a dead spot, about an inch in the steering, most noticable when driving on the highway or just parked... you can move the wheel a touch and it just moves the linkage into the steering box but there is no response at the pitman.
The car has about 30,000 miles on it and was wondering if it could be the steering box??? I have tried adjusting the nut on the top of the box but I can only get it to move back and forth about a half a turn, does this mean my steering box is toast? The steering is exactly like it is supposed to be but this dead spot is ruining otherwise what is a perfect car.
Is there anything I can try? Is there a reason why I can only turn that top adjustment like 1/2 a turn front and back and then it gets really tight.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well, all I can say is a dead spot of only an inch ain't that bad. But if you are determined to try it out, check this thread: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=118027

scauffiel,
the spot is really dead.. i wouldnt mind it if it had some resitance to it... it makes highway driving not to fun at all, even that little inch...
thats the adjustment that i tried doing... people are saying they went like 3 or four turns in... well mine wouldnt move more then about a quarter a turn in and it was stuck... i tried to back it out as far as a i could and it only went about a half of turn again and it was locked again... this to me seems like that adjustment is screwed with only a half a turn of play... i did it will the wheels off the ground, with someone slowly turning the wheel and the wheel in the middle... ive read everything i can get my hands on including these...

tha valve does control how hard tight my steering is, but it doesnt get rid of the slop... im just grasping here as the car is basically new and this isnt a problem on my 91Z that has over 100k miles...
i think im just gonna buy another FE2 box and lose another weekend of my life to the damn cars

steering nuts
Probably you front end is worn, tie rods, idler arm, C-link and maybe the pitman arm. Don't play with the adjustment you'll just screw something up. In the past i found that it will affect how hard the wheel is to turn and the self centering ability of the box, you will turn the wheel and it won't return on its own. I beleive that ista pre-load adjustment for the steering mechanism. Also your alignment could be off, affecting the responsiveness of the car

yeah.. that adjustment didnt help the slop at all... just the tension in the wheel when you were turning it...
it just went through inspection as I had to bring it in from somewhere else.. the car has 30K miles on it, and the guy that did the inspection said it was amazing... the front end stuff is beyond mint.. this car was never driven hard... it responds like new... its just that damn dead spot in the middle... the pitman arm doesnt move at all til it gets to that inch on the outside and it works fine... ill just let it slide for awhile until I can afford to throw a new box in or rebuild this one... thanks for the info!
