The flat part fits up with a rubber isolator, the bottom fits into the spring pocket in the a-arm. If you look at the a-arm, you can see how it is shaped to fit the coil of the spring.

Real quick way to tell is to set the spring down on your driveway, The flat side will make the spring stand straight up. That flat side is the top of the spring.
Another way to tell is the spring will only fit snugly one way in the a-arm.

Are they shorter springs or stock? Stock are a pain to put back in. If they are shorter, try puting them in the a-arms first. Thats how I got my Hotchkis springs in.

How far down are the a-arms swinging? I had mine pointing almost straight down. I placed the spring in the a-arm, dont seat the spring, the spring just needs to be in the general location of those drain holes (since my a-arm was pointing straight down, the spring was parallel to the aarm). The spring should be straight up and down, slide it up into the spot where the top goes in the crossmember, then pull up on the a-arm (should travel in an arc) making sure that the spring slides into where it sits in the a-arm pockets.

Might be, but be careful. There is alot of stored energy in a compressed spring, you dont want it to shoot out at you.
