9-bolt drum to disk?
9-bolt drum to disk?
I need some help fellow f-body guys, and gals. My 82 TA has the 10-bolt rear with disk brakes and I blew out the spider gears. I have a Borg-Warner 9-bolt that i pulled out of an 85 TA parts car a few years back and wanted to know if I could put the 82 disk brakes on the 85 9-bolt, is it just swapping the caliper brackets and done or what? Any help would be great. Thanks Jeremy.

Hey Jeremy, welcome aboard. Lots of good info in here.
You can't just swap 9 and 10 bolt backing plates, they have a different bolt pattern. You could buy these NEW 9 bolt disc backing plates (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...872761937&rd=1) and install PBR/1LE style rear brakes and you'd be all set. You'd probably have to rebuild and/or replace the disc calipers anyway since they're probably frozen up, so why not upgrade the system to the good rear brake setup? This topic has been huge lately so if you do a search on "rear brake upgrade" or something like that you'll get a ton of info.

Ha, you got one to. What gears does the 9 bolt have and is it posi? I had a 3.08 non posi 9 bolt with drums and half the people on here wouldnt believe me. Anyway, you will have to get disk backing plates for a 9 bolt. That disk setup isnt that great and often has problems. I however didnt have the problems everyone else experiences with them, but have since converted to the newer style. By the way my 9 bolt that had drums was out of an 85 ta also. I might, emphesis on might have a set of those backing plates some where from my conversion if they didnt get pitched somehow. If you cant find anyone else that has them let me know and I will check.

MOMAR my 9-bolt is also a 3.08 open transammaniac might want to check his to see whether it is posi or not because from what I read on 9bolt.com the drum brake rears all open carriers I could be wrong though I am probably going to put a 10 bolt in my car because I know where a 3.42 posi unit is that I can pick up for cheap and when I have the money I will build my 9-bolt and put it back in.
9-bolt drum to disk?
Thank you to all that replied. I guess this rear is a little wierd. It came out of an 85 TA that i bought to use to convert my 82 to look like an 85. I used all the body panels, interior, drivetrain(except the rear till now), and grown FXs. The rear is a one leg with 3.27's in it, at least that is what the tag says. I'm going to wait till spring to do the conversion to disk on the rear. Agian I thank you guys for your help. Thanks, Jeremy.

Transmaniac123 do you still have any of the 82 interior pieces? I am having a hard time finding these to restore the interior of my 84 Bird, and would be very interested in them.
